  • SEMESTER 1° Semester
MODULES This unit is a module of:
    TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB

    AIMS AND CONTENT

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

On successful completion, students will be expected to be able to: 1. Explain and apply proficiently the kinetic rate laws for sizing different types of reactors. 2. Formulate and apply algorithms to design isothermal and non-isothermal reactors for simple and multiple reactions. 3. Understand the principles of heterogeneous reaction engineering

    AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

On successful completion, students will be expected to be able to:

    • Understand the basic principles of heterogeneous reaction engineering
    • Apply the kinetic law in the correct sizing of homogeneous and heterogeneous reactors
    • Set the material balance correctly on a generic chemical reactor
    • Evaluate the relative effect of mass transfer and chemical kinetics on the operation of a multiphase reactor
    • Understand the role of fluid dynamics on the behavior of a heterogeneous chemical reactor

    TEACHING METHODS

Teaching is delivered by frontal lectures in the classroom. 30 hours will be devoted to the presentation of theoretical content while 20 hours to the solution of problems and numerical exercises. Transversal skills will be acquired through the solution of numerical exercises to be carried out in groups with the help of commercial software packages.

    SYLLABUS/CONTENT

    • General characteristics of reactors with two and three phases. (10 h)
    • Correlations for gas-liquid reactors: bubble columns, gaslight, plate columns, packed columns, falling film reactors, mechanically agitated devices. Correlations for liquid-liquid reactors: spray columns, perforated plate columns, static mixers, mixer-settlers.  (10 h)
    • Solid-fluid catalytic reactors: fixed bed reactors, moving bed reactors, fluidised bed reactors.  (20 h)
    • Gas-liquid-solid three-phase reactors. Multifunctional reactors: classification of multifunctional reactors (with mass transfer, with energy transfer, with momentum transfer). (10 h)

    EXAMS

    EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam will consists in an oral discussion on one of the subject presented during the course, in particular the design of a specific multiphase chemical reactor.

    ASSESSMENT METHODS

The student must identify the operating conditions for a particular chemical reactor when operating parameters change. Elements which will be considered for the evaluation will include: familiarity with the subject, clarity of presentation, tackling of unusual problems
