Basic course in fluid mechanics
The course provide the introductory knowledge to address basic problems in fluid mechanics. The concepts of fluid and pressure are introduced, the mechanical energy equation is formally derived, thermodynamics aspects are considered, to address the behavior of fluids in static and dynamic conditions, as well as the interactions between fluids and rigid bodies.
The module provides the knowledge necessary for solving basic fluid mechanics problems. The student should be able to treat simple problems of statics and dynamics of fluids, by enforcing both integral (i.e. macroscopic) and differential (local) balances, identifying the main forces/moments at play and reflecting on the most appropriate hypotheses to simplify the equations.
The course is organized in lectures and exercises, provided within the course. All concepts introduced will be explained also through exercises and examples, to guarantee maximum understanding of the subject matter.
Introduction; the continuum assumption and the fluid; fluid static, fluid kinematics and strain analysis; integral equations of motion; flow in ducts; Bernouilli and energy equations; differential equations of motion (Cauchy, Navier-Stokes); inviscid irrotational flows; elementary viscous flows; introduction to the concepts of lift and drag.

All class schedules are posted on the EasyAcademy portal.
During the course two partial exams will be offered, for students to be able to pass the exam right at the end of the semester.
Students with SLD or any other regularly certified special educational needs are advised to contact the instructor at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching and examination methods that, in compliance with the course objectives, take into account individual learning requirements.
During the semester the students are required to take two partial exams, for the instructor to assess their level of comprehension of the discipline. During classes the instructor makes every possible effort to involve the students, to render them active participants in the course and to become interested in fluid dynamics. Among other things, the instructor has created a photo/video contest(http://www.dicat.unige.it/bottaro/photovideo.html) asking for the students to take pictures or videos of fluid mechanics phenomena, and to describe their observations in a few lines of text.
