AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The module is aimed at recognizing the main insect pests of ornamental plants, acquiring knowledge on their bio-ethology and sdamage caused to the host plants. Further aims are to provide basic knowledge on control strategies with particular regard to low environmental impact techniques, and to set up and apply a correct phytosanitary management of ornamental and historic plants. Knowledge necessary to better understand the topics presented in the course are to be found in the following scientific areas: environmental and applied botany and ornamental plants.

TEACHING METHODS

The course consists of lectures and a final laboratory exercise.
For lectures, the teacher makes use of presentations and slides, made available to students.
During the course, the degree of learning achieved by the students will be assessed from time to time during lectures. During the lessons questions will be asked to verify both the previous knowledge and the level of understanding and the ability to link the different topics.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Relationships between insect pests and host plants. Trophic activity, direct and indirect damage. Symptomatology. Causes that favor insect pests outbreaks.
native and exotic invasive insect pests.
Sampling techniques.
Control methods, with particular attention to low environmental impact strategies. Trunk injections. Natural and biological control.
Main insect pests related to ornamental plants in the urban environments: distribution, biology, behavior and control strategies.

Teaching material (e.g. PowerPoint presentations, articles for further information and critical readings) will be available to the students.
