The aim of the course is to allow students the comprehension of the potential offered by modern structures, with particular attention to those manufactured in composite materials, and the constraints related to structural requirements, which must be taken into account in the design of small crafts.
Starting from the loads acting on the structures, through the analysis of the stresses present and the comparison with the admissible stresses, a structural design methodology for the dimensioning of primary structures, is presented, in compliance with the regulations required for small boats.
Front lessons and exercises. Students' project discussion and revisions,
Introduction to the course: general aspects of structural design, selection of materials and technologies. Materials and properties relevant in the nautical field. Selection criteria, materials selection indices.
Hull modelling as a beam. Examples of stresses evaluation.
Metals and polymers; environmental aspects. Composites - matrices; relationships between properties, processes, operating environment.
Testing and designing standards; hull scantling.
Composites - reinforcements; architecture and mechanical characteristics; technologies, joints, controls.
Loads acting on boats; boat parts, equipment and their dimensioning.
Demonstrations / practical exercises in the laboratory (in person or on video); composite production and assembly technologies. Characterization tests and control methods.
Basic notions of physics, mathematics, mechanics, chemistry are pre-requisites for a correct comprehension of the lessons.
