    OVERVIEW

The teaching provides the basic tools needed for the spatial knowledge of the territory, through main survey methods for the local area. Statistical methods provide the basis to check the campaigns' quality and to analise the obtained results.

    AIMS AND CONTENT

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

The teaching provides the theoretical and practical tools for the survey of the buildings using photogrammetry, laser scanner and traditional topographic tecniques. It also provides the tools necessary in cadastral updating procedures; elements of observations treatments will provide the basis for the quality control of the obtained results.

    AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The teaching aims to provide the theoretical-practical tools for applying photogrammetric and laser scanner survey techniques to the built environment, supplemented by traditional surveying techniques, as well as the use of cadastral topographic procedures for cadastral cartography (Pregeo) and the building cadastre (Docfa). Elements of the processing of observations will provide the basis for the control of the campaigns carried out and the results obtained, identifying the most appropriate accuracies and measurement schemes in compliance with the required accuracies.

At the end of the teaching the student will have to know the principles necessary for the design, execution, processing and analysis of the techniques and procedures dealt with, will have to understand the quality of the whole process and will have to be able to carry out simple applications in autonomous way.

    TEACHING METHODS

Lectures (30 hours) and practice (20 hours) related to the campaign survey, to the calculation and to the firsts critical analysis.

For the processing procedures we give priority to the use free and open source software to provide students.

The instrumental and numerical exercises are particularly useful in learning instrumental operating practices discussed in class, to the processing of measurement campaigns and to the acquisition of the necessary sensitivity for its analysis. Both exercises are needed to compile the technical report that is an integral part of the oral exam.

The teaching is held in Italian but they are available bibliographic references in English; the technical report and the examination can be conducted in English.

Working students and students with certified SLD (Specific Learning Disorders), disability or other special educational needs are advised to contact the teacher at the beginning of the lessons to agree on teaching and examination arrangements so to take into account individual learning patterns, while respecting the teaching objectives.

    SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Main methods of survey available today.

Photogrammetric survey of the neighbors: the photogrammetric process, the sensors, the return process, the precision obtainable, applications and products of photogrammetry.

Laser scanner survey: operating principles, types of instruments and precision obtainable; system limits and potential of integration with photogrammetric techniques.

Traditional survey methodologies applied to buildings: optical level, principles of operation and procedures for the monitoring of buildings; total station, operating principles and procedures for the support of photogrammetric and laser scanner.

Introduction to the main services offered by the Italian Land Agency: the procedure of update of cadastral maps with Pregeo and of manufactured register with Docfa.

Elements of observations processing: concepts of precision, control of measures and results, methods of assessment and reduction of residual errors; linear transformations of the position and dispersion indexes, the mean and the variance; concepts of redundancy of measurements and their Least Squares Adjustment.

The measurement campaigns will include the photogrammetric survey, complete with topographic support, and the laser scanner survey.

The measurement campaign will lead to the drafting of a technical report to be carried out in small groups of students, in which critically analyze the survey.

It will also be possible to compare the different techniques also considering their integration.

    EXAMS

    EXAM DESCRIPTION

The examination consists of an oral test, with presentation (via slides) and discussion of the application carried out in small groups (2 to 4 persons), complete with critical analysis using quality control procedures of the campaigns carried out and the obtained results, like the work were delivered to the commitmenter.

Knowledge of the theoretical-practical concepts of the teaching as well as the ability to critically analyse the entire surveying process will be assessed in the examination.

    ASSESSMENT METHODS

The oral examination will assess knowledge of the theoretical concepts of the teaching, technical language property, as well as the ability to critically analyse what has been worked on.

Therefore the final grade will take into account the quality of the presentation (relating to the processing techniques employed, the analyses carried out, the strategies for solving any problems encountered), the critical discussion of the results obtained carried out, the expository capacity and knowledge of the theoretical concepts.

    FURTHER INFORMATION

It is preferable, but it is not mandatory, that the group takes the examination at the same exam round.
It is requested that the presentation slides of the technical report are deliverde during the examination, either by sending them by email or by delivering them on a informatic medium (CD, DVD or USB stick).
