At the end of the course, the students will be able to determine the control strategies for a large class of problems and to implement these strategies with specific software. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the course, the student will be able: to analyse the main characteristics of a dynamic system to know the most relevant control methodologies for dynamic systems to design controllers on the basis of prerequisites and desired performance indexes to implement these controllers with suitable software PREREQUISITES The main prerequisites are related to Systems Theory and Operations Research TEACHING METHODS The teaching methods consist in frontal lessons by the teacher and team working activities in which the students must formalize and implement some control problems with specific software and discuss the results via sensitivity analysis and scenario evaluation SYLLABUS/CONTENT Introduction to dinamic systems Continuous-time dynamic systems: state-space representation, model classification, properties Discrete-time dynamic systems: state-space representation, model classification, properties State feedback with measurable and non measurable state, PID regulators Continuous-time optimal control: Hamilton-Jacobi theory, LQ problem Discrete-time optimal control: dynamic programming, LQ problem Model Predictive Control RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY P. During the test, the student has to discuss a project or a team working activity carried out during the lessons; in the presentation the student must describe the definition and implementation of a control problem, by discussing in detail all the results. Moreover, the student must answer some open questions regarding the topics addressed in the course. Students with learning disorders will be allowed to use specific modalities and supports that will be determined on a case-by-case basis in agreement with the delegate of the Engineering courses in the Committee for the Inclusion of Students with Disabilities. ASSESSMENT METHODS The exam aims to verify the following aspects about the knowledge of the student: - knowledge regarding the main control problems for dynamic systems, with reference to interesting cases for management engineering, and the methods for their solutions - ability to formalize and implement control problems - ability to analyze the solutions and to evaluate alternative scenarios for the control of dynamic systems The evaluation of the exam will take into account not only the knowledge of the contents addressed in the course but also the reasoning and critical analysis skills of the student, as well as his/her capability to use a technical lexicon appropriate to the context.
