    TEACHING LOCATION
  • GENOVA
  • SEMESTER 2° Semester
    TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB

    OVERVIEW

The teaching deals with the monitoring of the territory and the built environment by means of geomatic surveying techniques, such as photogrammetry, also by drone, and laser scanning. Attention is paid both to the planning, implementation and processing of measurement campaigns and to the interpretation of the obtained results.

    AIMS AND CONTENT

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

The class aims to provide the theoretical and practical tools for the monitoring of both natural and built environment. Furthermore, the class explains the tools, criteria and methodologies useful for monitoring, from the point of view of an optimal design of the survey (by means of network simulation techniques), for the data processing phases (by applying specific international GPS techniques) and for a correct analysis of the results (by means of statistical inference).

    AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

During the teaching, the surveying techniques addressed in the Geomatics I (spirit level and total station) will be deepened; GNSS surveying for post-processing will be introduced, in order to monitor points with a high level of precision, as well as photogrammetry and laser scanning, in order to perform areal measurements according to the specificity of the monitoring object. Some in-depth studies will be devoted to the optimal design of measurement campaigns, their processing phase and the advanced analysis of results.
Therefore, at the end of the teaching, the students will be able to
    - plan an integrated measurement campaign using different measurement techniques
    - carry out a measurement campaign using the available topographic instrumentation
    - process the obtained data and analyse the results
    - evaluate the quality of the obtained results on the basis of the expected precision and the initial characteristics of the data (resolution, accuracy, precision)
    - work in a team and critically evaluate their work

    PREREQUISITES

The notions covered in the Geomatics I teaching are closely linked to those covered in this teaching.

    TEACHING METHODS

Lectures (30 hours) and exercises (20 hours), the latter related to the survey experience carried out in the field, the processing of the resulting data and the first critical analyses.
The instrumental exercises, as well as the numerical exercises for processing and analysing the data deriving from the measurement campaign, are particularly useful for learning the operational practices illustrated during the lessons, for processing the measurement campaigns and for acquiring the necessary sensitivity for the relative analyses.
The teaching is held in Italian but bibliographical references are available in English.

Working students and students with certified SLD (Specific Learning Disorders), disability or other special educational needs are advised to contact the teacher at the beginning of the lessons to agree on teaching and examination arrangements so to take into account individual learning patterns, while respecting the teaching objectives.

    SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Criteria and methodologies useful for the design, processing and analysis of geomatic monitoring campaigns will be illustrated. In particular, the issues related to the optimal design of the survey through topographic network simulation techniques, the processing of measurement campaigns and the related analysis of results will be addressed.
The teaching completes the knowledge of the main surveying methodologies already covered in the Geomatics I, by introducing post-processing precision GNSS surveying, photogrammetry (also from drone) and laser-scanner. Particular attention will be paid to the possibility of integration between the presented surveying techniques. The theoretical illustration of the instruments and their operating methods and the description and use of software for data processing will be addressed.
The integrated measurement campaign, which will be carried out using the different techniques covered, will allow for a first operational experience.

    EXAMS

    EXAM DESCRIPTION

Oral examination (in Italian or English), with presentation (via slides) and discussion of the application carried out in small groups (2-4 members), complete with critical analysis using quality control procedures of the campaigns carried out and the obtained results, like the work were delivered to the commitmenter.

Knowledge of the theoretical-practical concepts of the teaching as well as the ability to critically analyse the entire treated process will be assessed in the examination.

    ASSESSMENT METHODS

The oral examination will assess knowledge of the theoretical concepts of the teaching, technical language property, as well as the ability to critically analyse what has been worked on.
Therefore the final grade will take into account the quality of the presentation (relating to the processing techniques employed, the analyses carried out, the strategies for solving any problems encountered), the critical discussion of the results carried out, the expository capacity and knowledge of the theoretical concepts.
