OVERVIEW

This course presents the Internet and recent paradigms such as Internet of Things and Cloud Computing. Special attention will be paid to the evolution of the Web, focusing in particular  on the Semantic Web and the Semantic Web of Things. Application scenarios will then be presented in which the various technologies are used. Among these, the use of the principles of the semantic web for annotating web pages from according to Search Engine Optimization (SEO) principles.

The aim of the course is to provide students with knowledge and understanding of key features of the Internet and Web evolution, specifically Semantic Web.

This course will present the Internet infrastructure and will describe new paradigms such as the Internet of Things and Cloud Computing.  The course will then focus on the Semantic Web and on related formalisms for knowledge representation, with exercises and description of application scenarios.

At the end of the course, students will be skilled about Internet infrastructure and new trends, and should have abilities to build and query an ontology and to annotate web contents by using structured data markups (Microdata, RDFa, JSON-LD).  

 

PREREQUISITES

The prerequisite for this course is 12 CFU in Computer Science

TEACHING METHODS

Teaching is based on lectures, working groups,  and on class exercises. Classes can be attended face-to-face or online.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Internet infrastructure: key concepts about TCP/IP model, next generation internet, mobile internet and Internet of Things. Cloud Computing. Web Evolution: Social and Semantic Web, Linked Data, Semantic Web of Things, markups for structured data.
