OVERVIEW

The course offers an introduction to landscape architecture design, exploring the central issues related to the composition of public open space: from formal to functional aspects, from the environmental role of the plant component to its evolution over time, analyzing how the different elements contribute to determine a spatial configuration and affect the experience of the space.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to provide a basic syntax and tools for the design of open spaces. The main objective is to enable students to understand and acquire the fundamentals of landscape architecture design - from the role of the analysis of the context in a design project, to the basic compositional rules, to the main elements of landscape design. The course has both a theoretical and applicative character and is divided into frontal lessons and a series of individual thematic design exercises.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, the student must prove to be able to:

1 Recognise the objectives of a specific landscape architecture design project,
2 Identify the main elements of the context useful for design purposes,
3 Understand the general organization of a landscape architecture design project,
4 Identify the basic compositional elements of a landscape architecture design project and recognize their role in the configuration of different spaces,
5 Evaluate the design strategies used to meet the formal and functional objectives and those related to the perception that the intervention proposes.

TEACHING METHODS

The course is both theoretical and applicative. It consists of lectures, seminars, site visits and a series of individual themed design exercises, closely related to the topics covered during the lessons.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course introduces students to landscape architecture design, providing a basic compositional syntax and the operational tools for the construction of public open space and discussing the different modes and practices they are based upon. Exploring different typological models (private gardens, public parks, urban squares), the course aims to examine the formal and compositional characteristics of the design of open spaces while, at the same time, covering the complexity of objectives that a landscape deisgn project must meet: from aesthetic to functional aspects, from the necessity to respond to environmental issues to social implications. Specific lessons will be aimed at illustrating the main compositional elements: the tangible ones (topographic form, paths, water, vegetation and its evolution over time) and the intangible ones, linked to sensory perception and the construction of the atmosphere. During the lessons, we will also explore the different spatial conditions the possibilities of aggregation of the basic compositional elements create.
