    AIMS AND CONTENT

    AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Aim of the course is to analyse the theories and notions used to describe geometry of the ship hull and of marine propellers, computing their main properties in terms of mass and volume distributions. The achieved knowledge will be used to address typical ship hydrostatic computations. In addition the course includes the explanation, also by means of practical excercises, of an open source software for modelling the hull of a ship and perform hydrostatic computations.

    TEACHING METHODS

Theoretical lessons and practice on the hull modelling software

    SYLLABUS/CONTENT

    Content of theoretical lessons:

    • Introduction to ship geometry
    • The lines plan: definitions and typical layout.
    • Integral quantity evaluation: theorems and numerical methodologies.
    • Hydrostatic computations: practical examples and excercises on the computation of the main properties of a floating body.
    • Theory of electronic spreadsheet.
    • Marine propeller geometry: definitions and main geometrical characteristics.

In addition, lessons will be devoted to practice on hull modelling through the use of the open source software Free!Ship.

    EXAMS

    EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam includes a written test of the approximate duration of two hours.

An oral discussion must be sustained to complete the exam, after succesfully pass the written test.

    ASSESSMENT METHODS

The written exam is used the assess the capability of the student to carry out computations typical of naval architecture and to correctly present results.

During the oral exam the knowledge of the topic addressed during lessons will be evaluated.
