OVERVIEW

The Course introduces students to the knowledge of the basic international rules concerning shipping and maritime transports   as well as marine insurance, fundamental for the professional training in the maritime field.. 

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of the course is to introduce students to the knowledge of the basic items concerning the vessels’ utilization, including their safety and security, and maritime carriages of goods, through an analysis of the relevant national, international and E.C. laws and rules.

The aim of the Course ie to introduce the students to the knowledge of the basic rules and documents concerning the shipping field and maritime carriages as well as of the basic rules concernning marine insurance (hull&machinery, cargo insurance and P and I Clubs).

TEACHING METHODS

The Course is based on traditional lessons as well as on seminars and/or meetings aimed at the study of specific topics and also on testimonials from maritime operators and on analysis of relevant legal texts and documents.

Working students and students with certified SLD (Specific Learning Disorders), disabiity or other special educational needs are advised to contact the teacher at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching and exam arrangements so to take into account individual learning patterns, while respecting the teaching objectives.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

·     Maritime law sources

·     Maritime Administration 

·     Maritime Zones and jurisdiction

·     The ship and its administrative regime (concept of ship, ship registration and nationality, technical and human seaworthiness, ship documents and certificates)

·     Safety and Security Rules: International Standards (Solas and Marpol Conventions, ISM Code and ISPS Code, STCW Convention, Maritime Labour Convention, Colregs, etc.)

·     Port and Navigation Controls, (PSC, VTS, etc.) – Classification Societies

·     The shipping operators :

shipowner, shipmanager, master/officers/crew, vessel’s agent, broker and forwarding agent

·     Ships and property:

-Shipbuilding and Ships Sale Contracts

·     Charterparties and carriages by sea:

-  Bareboat charter and vessel Leasing contract

 - Time charter, Voyage charter, Contract of   affreightment, Service contract

-   Carriage of goods and containers by Sea in national and international traffics

-   -   Carriage of Dangerous Goods (IMDG Code)

- Shipping Documents (Charterparties, Bills of lading, Seawaybills, Time sheets, etc.)

* Pilotage, Towage and Salvage at Sea Rules

*Marine Insurance:

-Hulls and Machinery coverages,
