CODE 101131 ACADEMIC YEAR 2022/2023 CREDITS 6 cfu anno 2 MARITIME SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 10948 (L-28) - GENOVA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR ING-IND/33 LANGUAGE English TEACHING LOCATION GENOVA SEMESTER 2° Semester TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB OVERVIEW The course deals with the elements related to the operation of a shipboard power system providing details on the electrical machines employed for maritime applications, typical layouts of power distribution (operation and protection) and information on the hazards and safety precautions for low and high voltage electric systems. The course is part of a set of courses on the topic of electric power systems relevant for the figure of the engineer officer and electro-technical officer, within STCW. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The teaching of shipboard electrical systems aims to consolidate the skills of the maritime students in an application context of the knowledge of electrical engineering. Training proposals are proposed on the knowledge of the principal components and main characteristics associate to electrical machines. The correct definition and basic sizing and operation of power system distributions and protection devices. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the course the student is expected: to know and comprehend the operation of a shipboard power system and the interaction between electric machines, power distribution system, generators and loads. to solve problems related to the operation of electrical machines; to solve problems related to the operation and protection of the power distribution; to know the elements related to the hazard of high voltage system for shipboard application; to know the procedure to follow in order to safely operate high voltage system on ships. PREREQUISITES The student expected background to fully understand the content of the course is related to the basics of electric circuits, especially AC systems, single phase and three phase, and electromagnetism. TEACHING METHODS Theoretical lectures in class (or via Teams according to the COVID situation) and practical exercises during the lectures. Working students and students with certified SLD (Specific Learning Disorders), disability or other special educational needs are advised to contact the teacher at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching and examination arrangements so to take into account individual learning patterns, while respecting the teaching objectives. SYLLABUS/CONTENT The course will cover the following topics: Fundamentals of electrical machines employed in shipboard systems, e.g. transformer, asynchronous machine, synchronous machine, DC machine and special machines: general introduction to electric machines; structures and operating principles; equivalent circuits; rated data and plate; operation of transformers in parallel torque and current characteristics of motors and generators; methods of AC motors start-up and speed control. Electrical Power Distribution Boards and Electrical Equipment description of the transmission and distribution of electrical power suitable layout of power distribution system employed in maritime applications; electric cables operation (thermal and voltage drop analysis); short circuits; power System protections (circuit breaker, fuse, disconnects switch, relays). High Voltage system in shipboard applications general overview of the specific elements related to the operation of High voltage system; hazard related to high voltage electrical systems; effect of current on human body; typical switchboard layout, operation and maintenance; safety procedure and equipment (Personal Protective Equipment - PPE) to operate on high voltage shipboard systems. The candidate shall grant access to the oral part of the examination with a score of the written part equal or higher than 16/30. The examination dates will be published on the University online calendar and registration for the examination shall close four days prior the calendar examination date. In the unlikely case of impossibility of taking the examination in presence due to the COVID emergency, the test will be done remotely via Teams and the test will be only oral with the request of solving exercises in line with the one proposed for the written examination. ASSESSMENT METHODS The written examination will be applicative exercises related to the topic of the course and this is aimed at evaluating the operational skills of the candidate. During the oral examination is aimed at evaluating the understanding of the theoretical concept discussed during the lectures. In case of telematic examination due to the COVID emergency, the examination will be oral only but accounting for both exercises related to the topic of the course and theoretical concept discussed during the lectures.
