The course provides the basics of the modern telecommunication networks. The main services and critical aspects of the Internet will be faced and discussed. The principal actions to garantee the networks and computer security will be presented. Furthermore, the main characteristics of electronic mail, the techniques of cryptography and digital signature will be described, as well as the principal kinds of malware.
The objective of the course is to provide the basics of the modern telecommunication networks, specifically as concerns the main services and critical aspects of the Internet. The principal actions to garantee the networks and computer security will be addressed. Furthermore, the main characteristics of electronic mail, the techniques of cryptography and digital signature will be described, as well as the principal kinds of malware.
Attendance, active participation to lectures, and individual study will allow students

The modern telecommunication networks. Structure of the Internet: organization, protocols, and services. Access technologies, access speed, transmission media, wireless networks, mobility.
Internet Network Addressing: concept of network, domains, public and private networks; business networks (VPN) and their interconnections.
E-mail. Basics of cryptography: symmetric and asymmetric cryptography: shared, public and private keys. Confidentiality, integrity, non-repudiation of messages: digital signature.
Basics of network and computer security: Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting.
Malware: behavior and principal characteristics.
Hardening of computer systems.
Models for cloud computing: Software as Service (SaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS).
