OVERVIEW

The course has the main aim to provide students theoretical and methodological instruments to deeply undertand political parties and their behaviours within the electoral, parliamentary and executive arenas and at internazional level.

A second topic will focus on the electoral competition in order to provide students with analytical tools able to grasp political strategies adopted by political parties and the reasons behind voters' choices.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course illustrates the origin and development of political parties and thei perfomance in all arenas where they operate. A special attention is devoted to the legitimacy of political parties in the contemporary democracies in relation to relevant political issues as populism and technocracy.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

By attending the course, students will:

  1. Obtain a scientific method for the studying political phenomena and, in particular, for studying political parties and their political performance;
  2. Enhance independent and critical judgments towards political issues
  3. Understand (and predict) political parties' and voters' actions

PREREQUISITES

A basic knowldge of political science methods is required

  1. Discussions in classroom
  2. Presentations of empirical researches on political parties and voters' behaviours
  3. Discussions on current political issues at national and international level
