The course takes place in the first and second semesters of the first year of the bachelor degree program in Materials Science. The course provides an introduction to the experimental method and units of measurement as well as a recall of the main mathematical tools needed. Then the course deals with the kinematics and dynamics of point-like particles, the dynamics of systems of points and rigid bodies, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and an introduction to mechanical waves
The course aims at providing students with a basic knowledge of the following topics of classical physics: mechanics of points particles and systems, fluids, thermodynamics, mechanical waves.
At the end of the course students will be able to:
A) know the fundamental laws relating to the topics dealt with in the course;
B) apply the above-mentioned knowledge to the resolution of physical problems that require the use of mathematical methods held by first-year students.
The course aims to provide students with tools for addressing the phenomena of classical mechanics and thermodynamic and for resolving exercises and problems, with particular attention to topics of practical and applicative interest. In particular, the aim is to train students in the scientific method at the base of classical physics, and appropriately characterize the observables and the quantities in play and the laws governing their evolution. Students will be able to solve problems of mechanics and thermodynamics of growing complexity, using the mathematical tools they learn during the year.
No specific prerequisites are foreseen except of course the basic knowledge provided by high school courses. The introductory lessons on basic maths offered to students with additional credits will allow all students to reach an homogenous level to undertake the study of classical physics.
Frontal lessons. Exercises. The material used during the lessons is provided to students via Aulaweb and also in paper form, one copy per student. Several exercises are also provided, as well as examples of written exams of previous years
Introduction: physical quantities, units of measurements, uncertainties.
Mechanics: cinematic laws of the motion of a material point; dynamics and forces. Complex systems. Laws of gravitation. Fluids.
Thermodynamics: definitions, equilibrium, I and II principle, entropy and microscopic interpretation.

Written and oral exams. The written exams proposed a set of problems and exercises of varying difficulty covering the topics dealt with during the year. Oral exams typically last 20 to 40 minutes with questions aimed at verifying the understanding of the laws of mechanics and thermodynamics. This structure allows the examining commission to evaluate the level of knowledge reached by students. The final note is the average of the written and oral exams.
To help students evaluate their preparation during the semesters, simulations of exams without notes assigned are organized, with proposed exercises similar to those of the real exams. At the end of each semester, facultative written half-exams are held
