Precisely, starting from the main production technologies used in manufacturing industry, students will learn the skills that allow the reduction of costs and time through the automation of the production process. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES Purpose of the course is to provide general concepts regarding the main processes of metallic and polymeric materials for manufacturing of mechanical components. Attendance and active participation in the proposed training activities (frontal lectures and visits to laboratories and/or companies) and individual study will enable the student to acquire the ability to choose possible production solutions for a given manufactured item, identify the main process parameters and their effect on product characteristics, evaluate possible production problems, acquire general notions about machine tools and production system management. In addition, the teaching aims to provide the student the knowledge and tools necessary to decide which technology to use for the production of a component, evaluating possible alternatives on the basis of both technological and economic considerations. In his or her personal work, the student will need to reinforce knowledge and harmonize course content, which contains many closely related topics. The student will therefore be able to: choose the most suitable process to obtain a product for a given application; evaluate the influence of process parameters on the quality of a component; apply the knowledge acquired to evaluate possible alternatives to traditional processes on the basis of both technological and economic considerations. TEACHING METHODS Teaching is divided into theory lectures and application examples. Optionally, students may participate in one or more training activities that will be organized through seminars and company visits. SYLLABUS/CONTENT The course program includes presentation and discussion of the following topics: 1. Introduction to manufacturing technologies; 2. Processing by plastic deformation (rolling, extrusion, forging, drawing); 3. Machining (milling, turning, drilling, grinding); 4. Foundry; 5. Additive technologies; 6. Joining techniques. There will be 3 examination calls for the winter session (January-February) and 3 examination calls for the summer session (June, July and September). No special calls will be granted outside the periods specified in the course regulations, except for working students enrolled part-time. ASSESSMENT METHODS Details on exam preparation and the degree of depth of each topic will be given during the lectures. The oral examination will focus mainly on the topics covered during the lectures and will aim to assess not only whether the student has achieved an adequate level of knowledge, but whether he or she has acquired the ability to understand the processes underlying the technologies covered in the course. The student will also be asked to schematize the essential parts of the various processes and tools used, also highlighting the effects of the various design solutions. The ability to describe the processes clearly and with correct terminology will also be assessed.
