OVERVIEW

Measurement systems (MS) may have different applications: for a laboratory testing setup metrological characteristics are privileged , in process automation dynamic and reliability properties are the main issues, while in automotive roughness is the main point. A good MS design defines the optimal solution and requires a complete view of the application: form general functionalities, to tech specs, from signal processing to intelligent MS architecture and communication interface.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Ability to design a measurement system (MS), from components and architecture selection, to software development for data acquisition and processing according to a specific application. Comprehension of issues related to the measurement of motion, forces and acoustic phenomena. Basics of signal processing.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Comprehension of the fundamental components in a MS and ability to identify their criticalities and strengths according to a specific application.
  • Comprehension of common methodologies for signal processing such as spectral analysis and signal filtering. Ability to evaluate application possibilities and to select proper setup parameters in practical cases.
  • Comprehension of MS architectures according to specific applications, such as measurements for automatic control or monitoring, to different dynamic performances and different processing options.
  • Ability to program data acquisition in LabView ® environment for monitoring, control or single measurements on a mechanical system.

TEACHING METHODS

Topics will be covered by lectures including application examples.

Laboratory sessions in small students groups will be devoted to the acquisition system programming and projects development.

All the material will be available in the Aulaweb page pf the course. Please check it regularly.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

General criteria for the description of a Measurement System MS. Functions and selection criteria of components in a MS: power supplies, references, oscillators, amplifiers and signal transmission in both voltage and current, interface criteria.

Data acquisition modules. and their applications in LabView®. MS architecture including a programmable device. Signal processing, spectral analysis and digital signal filtering.

Sensors and signal conditioning properties and applications. MS for force, torque and position.

Design and realization of a servo controlled positioner, and of a remote MS for vibration monitoring.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The final examination includes

  • A written test regarding the design of a MS for specific applications.
  • A written report regarding the assigned project already developed during Lab sessions. The report has to be delivered before the oral question.
  • An oral question regarding a general topic of a MS.

Students have to pass the written test to access the final oral question.

Students with SLD, disability or other regularly certified special educational needs are advised to contact the instructor at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching and examination methods that, in compliance with the course objectives, take into account the individual learning requirements.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The written test is evaluated considering the critical capacity to discuss specification and to select proper solution in the design of a MS.

The answer to the oral questions is evaluated considering the comprehension and the critical approach to the methods useful in MS development.

The technical report is useful to evaluate synthesis capacity and ability to define project parameters and proper use of components in a MS.

Generally the capacity to communicate with a proper technical language will be evaluated.
