    OVERVIEW

General  Chemistry with Laboratory (code 110732) worth 11 credits and takes place in the first half of the 1st year of the three-year degree in Materials Science.

    Classes are held in Italian.

For enrolled students, the teaching material is available on AulaWeb.

    AIMS AND CONTENT

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course will provide basic knowledge about: I) the fundamental concepts of General Chemistry, II) the structure and properties of matter in relation to its constitution and its state of aggregation, III) the chemical equilibrium and the main types of reactions and systems reagents.

    AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course is meant to provide students with basic knowledge on the structure of the matter (atomic structure, chemical bonding, aggregation states) and on the principles governing chemical equilibrium in homogeneous and heterogeneous systems, with particular attention to reactions taking place in aqueous solution and on electrochemistry.

Therefore, the course aims to provide students with the indispensable tools to understand matter and its chemical transformations.

The course also includes practical sessions during which exercises related to the topics covered in the theoretical part of the course are carried out.

    PREREQUISITES

This is the first chemistry course, so it is not necessary to have any prerequisetes at university level. The basic knowledge of mathematics and physics acquired at high school  are sufficient to understand the addressed topics.

    TEACHING METHODS

The course includes frontal lessons and classroom exercises, during which exercises related to the topics addressed in the theoretical part are solved and commented.

The course includes practical sessions in laboratory.

    SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Theoretical lessons: Atomic structure of matter. Periodic Table and periodic properties of the elements. Chemical bond. Chemical nomenclature. Chemical reactions. States of matter and their characteristics. Homogeneous and heterogeneous equilibria. Electrochemistry.

Numerical exercises: Inorganic Nomenclature. Chemical reactions. Stoichiometry formulas, stoichiometry of reactions. Solutions concentration. Colligative properties. pH calculation. Solubility product.

    Practical training in Laboratory.

    EXAMS

    EXAM DESCRIPTION

In order to access the examination, the students need to have completed the experimental activity.

The exam consists of a written and oral examinations.

The written examination consists of numerical exercises on the topics taught during the course.

The oral examination lasts at least 30 minutes and is always led by two lecturers with experience running examinations in the discipline.

The final evaluation takes into account the grade obtained on the written examination and the performance demonstrated at the oral examination.
