TEACHING MATERIALS | AULAWEB |
Knowledge of the chemical behavior of the elements of the s, p and d blocks of the periodic table, with particular attention to the relationship between bonding aspects and properties of inorganic compounds. Introduction to solid state inorganic chemistry and binary phase diagrams.
Acquire good command in the evaluation of the properties of inorganic compounds with particular reference to their applications in the field of materials.
Frontal lessons that include innovative teaching methods and exercises aimed at verifying the state of learning. The frontal lessons will be carried out with the aid of presentations that will be made available to students on the Aulaweb teaching application. The purpose of the laboratory is to familiarize the student with simple inorganic chemistry processes and to connect what has been learned in the classroom with practical experience. Attendance at the lessons is not mandatory, although strongly recommended. Attendance at all laboratory activities is mandatory. It will be possible to recover the experiences lost due to force majeure by agreeing with the teachers.
Recall of general concepts regarding: covalent bond, geometry of inorganic molecules, polar molecules and apolar molecules. Completion of chemical bonding knowledge: ionic bonding, ionic radii, typical ionic structures, lattice energy metal bonding free electron theory, band theory, conductors, insulators, intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors Ionic, metallic, atomic, molecular, covalent solids. Structure of elementary substances Some classes of the main inorganic compounds (oxides, hydrides, hydroxides, oxoacids, halides) and variation of their properties in the periodic table Structure of silicates and outline of silicate-based inorganic materials Phase equilibria in heterogeneous systems, significant state diagrams in the context of binary liquid-solid systems Preparation of metals by reduction processes, thermodynamic aspects, Ellingham diagrams Preparation of metals by electrolytic processes Methods of purification of metals Preparation, purification and properties of some important metals (Cu, Al, Ti).
During the course, didactic material will be published (Aul@WEB), but integration with appropriate texts is essential. Any university level textbook of "General Chemistry" on the market or available in the library of the M.F.N. it is valid, provided it is recent (of this century). For each student it is more useful and productive to look for the text in which the didactic setting is more welcome and stimulating for each topic, rather than relying on a single textbook. That said, and bearing in mind that the following list is certainly not exhaustive, some titles and a non-binding selection of texts are as follows:
Callister, Rethwisch - SCIENZA ED INGEGNERIA DEI MATERIALI – EdiSES
Bertini, Luchinat, Mani - CHIMICA INORGANICA- EdiSES
Atkins et al. - CHIMICA INORGANICA ‐ Zanichelli
Atkins, Jones, Laverman - PRINCIPI DI CHIMICA ‐ Zanichelli
Atkins - FONDAMENTI DI CHIMICA GENERALE ‐ Zanichelli
