The course aims to provide students with the theoretical contents at the basis of historical knowledge. Will be explored topics such as the study and interpretation of documents, the nature and use of historiographical sources, the main approaches and methodologies of historical research, the concept of archives.
The course has as its main objectives to provide students with the main tools of the historian understood as preparatory skills to develop a critical awareness in the field of historical disciplines, with a social and cultural perspective
Attendance and active participation in the proposed training activities will allow the student to acquire adequate knowledge regarding the main tools of the historian, intended as preparatory skills to develop a critical awareness in the context of historical disciplines, with a predominantly social and cultural perspective.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students must:
- know the fundamentals of the historical discipline
- knowing how to critically analyze historical sources
- orienting oneself between historiographic approaches and methodologies
- knowing how to explain the contents learned with clarity and historical language properties
Lessons will be held in person for a total of 36 hours. The use of multimedia resources and powerpoint presentations is foreseen. Interventions by expert teachers and researchers on particular topics of the course will be possible. Attendance at the lessons is recommended.
Structured case study activities will be provided during the course. These activities will allow attending students to acquire an OPEN BADGE which will certify participation in a course aimed at acquiring soft skills relating to the following key competences: functional literacy; personal; social; learn to learn.
In the event of a weather alert and in accordance with current legislation, teaching can be delivered remotely in synchronous mode through the Teams platform on the teaching channel, whose access code is: tqkzgse.
During the course the concept of history will be developed and the meaning attributed to the discipline and work of the historian will be deepened. Topics such as the scientific method, the objectivity and subjectivity of history, the purposes of historical knowledge, historical time, periodizations, archives will be explored. Particular attention will be paid to the types, criticism and use of historical sources. Case studies relating to particular types of sources will be taken into consideration, showing in detail their potential and limits in relation to concrete examples of historical reconstruction. Teaching contributes to achieving goals n.3-4 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The examination commission verifies the achievement of the training objectives, taking into account the following factors: a) level of mastery of the fundamental notions; b) ability to apply knowledge (source analysis); c) critical reasoning skills on the study carried out; d) ability to discursively organize knowledge, using the specialized language of the discipline.
