AIMS AND CONTENT
The course aims at providing students with the in-depht knowledge the main pathophysiological conditions as well as the immunopatholgical disorders. The deep knowledge provided in this course will be fundamental for the full understanding of laboratory medicine and then in the activities in clinical and experimental laboratories.
AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES
The full knowledge of the pathophysiological alterations and immune system pathologies allows to understand the fundamentals of laboratory medicine, facilitating the interpretation of clinical data in the context of the organ/apparatus dysfunctions. This knowledge, complemented by the knowledge of the pathogenetic mechanisms of diseases acquired in the first module of the annual teaching, prepares future professionals in clinical/diagnostic and research laboratories.
48 hours of lectures with multimedia presentations
Anemias Hemostasis and thrombosis Hemorrhagic diathesis: congenital and acquired alterations. CID Vascular disorders: edema, embolism, heart attack, shock. Digestive system (gastroesophageal reflux, ulcer, Chron's disease, ulcerative colitis and pancreatitis). Pathophysiology of the liver: portal hypertension and hepatic insufficiency Pathophysiology of the heart (defects in strength, electrical changes, valve defects, acute and chronic heart failure) Pathophysiology of the lung (ventilation defects, obstructive and restrictive syndromes, gas exchange defects, significance of hypercapnia) Pathophysiology of the kidney (glomerular, tubular, interstitial, vascular and urinary tract diseases; acute and chronic insufficiency) Endocrine and genital (hypo- and hormonal hypersecretions; fertility) Immunological memory Vaccines - Principle of vaccination. Active and passive immunization. Main types of vaccines. Adjuvants. Congenital immunodeficiencies of innate and acquired immunity Secondary immune deficiencies (HIV) Autoimmunity - Mechanisms of central and peripheral tolerance. Classification of the main autoimmune diseases and their characteristics Anti-tumor immunity - Effector cells and evasion mechanisms of tumor immunosurveillance. Cancer Immunoediting. Tumor immunotherapy. Microbiome, tumors and response to anti-tumor therapies Transplants - Solid organ transplants, classification and mechanisms of rejection. Allor direct and indirect recognition. Immunosuppressive drugs. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation

Oral examination on topics covered during lessons.
The student must correctly answer 3-4 questions. For final evaluation, the commission will evaluate the following requirements: the level of knowledge of the topics covered by the questions, the acquisition of specialized vocabulary and the ability to present and connect different related topics and to discuss the clinical data in the context of the organ/apparatus dysfunctions.
