CODE 108950 ACADEMIC YEAR 2023/2024 CREDITS 6 cfu anno 3 INGEGNERIA BIOMEDICA 8713 (L-8) - GENOVA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR ING-INF/06 LANGUAGE Italian TEACHING LOCATION GENOVA SEMESTER 2° Semester TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB OVERVIEW The course provides an overview of healthcare simulation, and how new technologies that can improve medical training. The materials include an introduction on the theories supporting medical training, followed by a part on simulation metodologies. Also, it will be analyzed how disruptive technologies can be used for medical training and assessment. In addition, an analysis of the commercially available devices will be provided. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the course, students will be able to: Distinguish between different techniques and technologies used in healthcare simulation Define the criticism of medical simulation and propose solution to enhance medical training and assessment Analyze commercially available simulators, as well as research prototypes to identify advantages and limitations Design and select tools for medical and surgical training Understand how a medical simulation is organized and how it works PREREQUISITES Basic programming and electronics knowledge TEACHING METHODS Lectures, Talks by experts (i.e., clinicians, instructors; engineers working in the healthcare simulation field) Group activities (hands-on assignments, presentations) SYLLABUS/CONTENT Introduction to medical simulation (history of healthcare simulation, patient safety) Simulation Methodologies (standardized patients, manikins, computer-based systems) Phases and Types of simulations (case scenarios, debriefing, Crisis Resource Management) Technologies for medical training (VR/AR, 3D modelling and printing; basic concepts of sensors for skills monitoring; haptics) Assessments of medical skills Existing technological solutions RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY Levine, A.I., DeMaria Jr, S., Schwartz, A.D. and Sim, A.J. eds., 2013.
