CODE 56951 ACADEMIC YEAR 2023/2024 CREDITS 9 cfu anno 1 INGEGNERIA MECCANICA 8720 (L-9) - GENOVA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR ING-IND/16 LANGUAGE Italian TEACHING LOCATION GENOVA SEMESTER 2° Semester TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB OVERVIEW The course introduces the concepts of tension and deformation and the fundamental aspects of the behavior of metallic materials. In addition, the methods of carrying out tests for the mechanical characterization of metallic materials and the methods of carrying out heat treatments of steels and aluminum alloys are described. Finally, the main aspects of plastic deformation and foundry processing are described. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the course, students will have the tools to choose, among the steels and aluminium alloys, the most suitable for a specific application. They will also be able to determine if and how to perform a heat treatment and how to verify the material characteristics. Finally, they will be familiar with the basic principles of machining by plastic deformation of metal materials and will be able to recognize with which technique a detail was made, as well as establish which process may be the most suitable to obtain a piece of the desired quality. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The purpose of the course is to provide students with the knowledge of the concepts of tension and deformation and describe the laws that bind them together, in the elastic and plastic fields. The brittle and ductile behavior of metallic materials is analyzed and it is described how environmental and operating conditions vary the toughness of a material. Particular importance is given to the description of the methods of execution of the heat treatments of steels and aluminum alloys and how the tests must be carried out to determine the mechanical characteristics of the materials. Finally, how to make metallic pieces, by means of plastic deformation or foundry are described At the end of the course, students will have the tools to choose, among the steels and aluminum alloys, the one most suitable for a specific application. They will also be able to determine if and how to perform a heat treatment and how to verify the characteristics of the material. Finally, they will be familiar with the basic principles of machining by plastic deformation of metals and the foundry and will be able to recognize with which technique a detail was made, as well as establish which process may be the most suitable to obtain a piece of the desired quality. PREREQUISITES Chemistry, Mathematics, Geometry. TEACHING METHODS The course consists of lectures and exercises. During the lessons, the teacher describes in depth the theories that explain the link between tension and deformation and the phenomena that occur inside metallic materials and that determine their fragile or ductile behavior. To facilitate the understanding of the methods of carrying out the characterization tests of metallic materials and the operating principles of the machinery used to carry out the work, extensive use of videos is made. Numerical exercises are carried out applying the rules described in the theoretical part. As part of the innovation learning project adopted by the Bachelor Degree Course in Mechanical Engineering, novel tools will be used for the active learning of students. The goal is to increase students' skills via interactive, experience-based, learning methodologies (e-learning, teamwork, etc.) for enhanced student participation, using an advanced level of communication that makes the student more aware and autonomous SYLLABUS/CONTENT The introduction to the basic principles of the mechanics of solids (stress and strain) will be followed by the studies on elastic state and the theory of plasticity. Next, the behaviour of materials in different stress conditions will be analyzed, as well as their brittleness and ductility. Equilibrium state diagrams of the metallic alloys are described, with particular care concerning the Fe-C phase diagram and the influence of the main alloy components on the properties of metallic materials. Next, the effects of thermal treatments are analysed. The standardized tests will be described, by which it’s possible to define the mechanical and technological properties of materials. The following point is the description of the foundry processes and the main plastic deformation operations (rolling, forging, extrusion, die drawing). RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY C. Gambaro, P. TEACHERS AND EXAM BOARD ENRICO LERTORA Ricevimento: 9 to 10 from Monday to Thursday by appointment Exam Board ENRICO LERTORA (President) CHIARA MANDOLFINO MARCO PIZZORNI LESSONS LESSONS START https://corsi.unige.it/8720/p/studenti-orario Class schedule The timetable for this course is available here: Portale EasyAcademy EXAMS EXAM DESCRIPTION The exam consists of two parts: written and oral. The written test lasts 20 minutes. The oral test can be performed only passing the written test. The two parts of the exam take place in the same day. During the written test, the student has to solve a numerical exercise, about the topics of Chapters 1,2 and 3 of the book. During the oral test, the student has to answer three questions: the first about the topics of Chapters 1,2,3,4,5,6 and 7 of the book; the second about the topics of Chapters 8, 10, 11 and 12 of the book; the third about the topics of Chapter 9 of the book. Students with SLD, with disabilities, or with other regularly certified special educational needs will agree with the teacher on the exam method and the compensatory instruments, by contacting the teacher at least 10 days before the exam. They will also be able to take advantage of the additional time required by law. ASSESSMENT METHODS The student's preparation is ascertained by examining the performance of the written exercise, which allows to verify the understanding of the laws that bind together the concepts of tension and deformation. During the oral exam, the student's ability to apply the information received in class is ascertained, demonstrating not only mnemonic learning but above all a mature assimilation of concepts.
