OVERVIEW

The course presents the fundamentals of mechanics of machines to mechanical engineering students, taking into consideration aspects related to the application of the principles of mechanics to the analysis of mechanisms, mechanical transmissions and machines, as well as morphological and functional discussion of the main components in them present.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The student will learn the most relevant phenomenological aspects of machine mechanics, as well as the foundations of kinematics, static and applied dynamics. He will also be able to discuss and analyze the morphological and functional characteristics of the main components of drives and mechanical transmissions.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, the student will have acquired basic knowledge on the typology, morphology and characteristics of mechanical mechanisms and transmissions and the ability to develop and solve simple kinematic, static and dynamic models for the quantitative analysis of their functioning, also in an integrated way with motors and loads.

PREREQUISITES

Analisi 1, Fisica, Disegno tecnico industriale, Fisica matematica.

TEACHING METHODS

Theoretical lessons integrated with examples and exercises.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Introduction to the Mechanics of Machines.
Constraints, kinematic pairs, topology, characteristics and mobility of the kinematic chains.
Contact forces and friction between solids. Forces between solids and fluids. Embodiment of kinematics pairs.
Kinematics of planar mechanisms: position and velocity models with analytical and geometric approaches.
Statics of planar mechanisms: constraints and reactive forces; determination (with analytical and geometric approaches) of reactive and motor forces/torques acting on a mechanism. Principle of virtual works. Transmission of forces.
Dynamics of mechanical systems with constant transmission ratio, with one degree of freedom: balance of mechanical power; efficiency and power flows; static characteristics of motors and loads; motor-load coupling; use of mechanical transmissions; steady state operating conditions; reduction to a free coordinate of forces, torques and inertias.
Free and forced vibrations of mechanical systems with one degree of freedom.
Mechanical transmissions: gears; ordinary and planetary gearings. Mechanical transmissions with deformable members: belts and chains.  Systems with ropes (hoists)

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Written and oral examination.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The exam includes a written test of quantitative analysis of the characteristics of mechanical systems, through the formulation and solution of simple kinematic, static and dynamic models of mechanical systems (mechanisms, engine-transmission-load systems)

Once the written test has been passed, an interview must be held on one or more topics of the course, in particular on the morphological and functional aspects of mechanical transmissions.
