AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Acquisition of the theoretical, technical and methodological skills necessary for the understanding and proper interpretation of most industrially and energetically relevant combustion phenomena. Acquisition of theoretical tools useful to the comprehension of the physical phenomena to which the combustion processes are subjected to, as well as on the implications connected with their industrial exploitation. Acquisition of fundmentale skills related to environmental issues, linked to the combustive processes. Basic competences on the main combustion diagnostic techniques.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course is aimed at providing the students with a general theoretical background dealing with the most relevant topics implied by the study of the combustion process.

Therefore, all students will have to acquire basics about the following topics, with special regards to their implication for combustive processes:

  • Thermodynamics.
  • Stoichiometry.
  • Chemical kinetics.

Joined with the introduction to the main physical models accounting for the combustion processes occurrence (e.g., collision theory), the acquired knowledges will lead the students to the comprehension of the mechanisms accounting for the main combustion processes and the main pollutant formation.

A practical utilisation of the theoretical acquired knowledges is pursued, aimed at making the students able to solve basic combustion design problems.

Besides to the previous, also an introduction to industrial processes and plants for the combustion control and pollutants emission limitation is provided.

Finally, a first approach to the main experimental techniques employed for the combustion processes characterisation and investigation is given (with an outlook to the second year courses).

TEACHING METHODS

Classroom and laboratory frontal lectures.

As a consequence of the possible extention of the sanitary emergency due to the COVID-19, it is possible that the lectures will be held telematically by means of the Microsoft Teams platform.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Written (on request), oral examination.

Examinations can be arranged both in the scheduled official dates and on appointment.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Independently on the examination modality (written or oral), the students will have to demonstrate their capability of utilizing the theoretical knowledges to solve practical (general) design problems by applying stoichiometry, chemistry, thermodynamics, chemical kinetics concepts.

Furthermore, the students will demonstrate the knowledge of theoretical backgrounds (provided within the frame of this course), adopted physical models and simplified methodologies commonly used in the combustion-related problems solution by answering at theoretical questions.

It will be object of specific ascertainment, during the exams, the knowledge of the main industrial solution aimed at limiting the combustion-related pollution.
