TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB

OVERVIEW

The course is aimed at students who have preferably already taken the General Physics exam. The prior knowledge required is that obtainable with a good general education at school level: the material made available by the teachers comprehensively covers the problems relating to the measuring instruments analyzed during the course. The student learns to work "in the field", to identify the critical aspects of the measures and to report on them.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course deaks with the most commonly used measurement and control methods for verifying the quality of products and for ensuring the correct evolution of industrial processes

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Study and use industrial and laboratory instruments. Describe the physical principle on which it is based and, in blocks, the entire apparatus.

TEACHING METHODS

We study sensors and devices that the students, with the assistance of the staff, use in the laboratories of the Naval Support and Experimentation Center (CSSN) of the Italian Navy and of the Center of Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) of NATO - La Spezia. Alternatively, in compliance with the University's health safety regulations, measurement and data acquisition systems are studied and created through lectures and laboratory sessions.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Sensors for the measurement of physical quantities normally used for the control of industrial processes: measurement of temperature, pressure and flows, acceleration, speed and position, forces and stretching, humidity, intensity of light and radiation. Description and use of equipment available in the laboratory, as examples of processes. Some possible examples: Standing acoustic wave apparatus for measuring the acoustic absorption coefficient of materials. Chemical analysis of metal alloys using the spectrum of light emitted by the sample (Metlal LAB), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Possible realization of simple measurement systems and signal conditioning in the laboratory.

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

The teaching material is delivered to the students by the teachers at the beginning of the course: it consists of texts in PDF format and manuals, including multimedia ones, of the tools addressed during the course.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Evaluation and discussion of short reports on the experiences made

ASSESSMENT METHODS

During the course of the lessons, each student is required to write a short report on the experiences made. After receiving their corrected and commented reports, each student discusses them with the teacher, preferably in the presence of their classmates. The examination board evaluates these reports and the student's related discussion.
