OVERVIEW

The course is dedicated to the study of the territory. In particular, political geography contextualizes the way in which human communities organize themselves and regulate their relations on the territory. Economic geography explains how the distribution of resources and population on earth affect socio-economic and environmental development.

The course can be taken for 9 CFU in Scienze dell’Amministrazione e della Politica (SAP) or for 6 CFU in Scienze Internazionali e Diplomatiche (SID) and in Teorie e Tecniche della Mediazione Interlinguistica.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to provide basic knowledge both in political and economic components. The student will therefore be able to identify and understand the consequences of political action on territory, above all in terms of renovation in space organization. At the same time, the student will be able to analyse the new intersections of economic action in the context of globalization at different levels of the geographical scale and by type of economic stakeholders.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

9 ECTS

  • summarize the elements that constitute the bases respectively of the political action of human communities in relation to the shape and opportunities of the territories that host them;
  • analyze and explain the methods of organization and the causes of human settlement and migration according to the changing demographic balance that can certainly alter political relations within states and between different states;
  • understand the reasons that induce a new redistribution of religions and languages and in the world;
  • understand the importance of territorial characteristics to ensure coherent governance policies at the local, regional, national, and international levels;
  • argue and describe (in written and oral form) how the action of man in the economic field and the exploitation of resources depend on the distribution and movements of man on earth.

6 ECTS

TEACHING METHODS

The course consists of lectures, for a total of 54 hours ( 9 ECTS) in SAP and 36 (ECTS) in SID and TTMI, aimed at presenting and studying the main notions of political and economic geography through the use of practical examples.

The materials used during the lessons will be uploaded to AulaWeb together with other materials (reports, links to databases, etc.) aimed at defining the quantitative aspects of the phenomena studied.

Occasionally, researchers or experts in the discipline (Italian and foreign) may also be invited to hold seminars to study specific aspects of the problems dealt with.

Attending students of SAP (9 ECTS) will also have the opportunity to carry out case studies through group work. The group work is divided into two phases: preparation of a written paper, oral presentation accompanied by sli-des. Timely information will be provided in class and via AulaWeb.

Positive assessment of the teamwork will allow attending students to acquire the following Open Badge: Personal skill - advanced level.

The students of the DEGREE COURSE in SCIENCES OF ADMINISTRATION AND POLITICS (SAP), IF UNABLE TO ATTEND, WILL BE ABLE TO FOLLOW THE LESSONS ON THE TEAMS CHANNEL: f3a5zi0, as the DEGREE COURSE in SAP has been included by the University in the "P.A.- Program. 110 e lode "which provides for the possibility of carrying out the teaching activity in e-learning mode (synchronous and / or asynchronous).

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

9 ECTS - The program is divided into four parts:

FIRST PART - Tools and models to interpret the demographic and migratory dynamics. The role of languages and religions to ensure socio-demographic balance.

SECOND PART - The concept of state and nation and the importance of land and maritime borders to legitimize the very existence of the state. Role and position of capital cities.

THIRD PART - Evolution of production sectors, transport and communication networks.

FOURTH PART - Urbanization and territorial governance.

6 ECTS - The program is divided into three parts:

FIRST PART - Tools and models to interpret the demographic and migratory dynamics. The role of languages and religions to ensure socio-demographic balance.

SECOND PART - The concept of state and nation and the importance of land and maritime borders to legitimize the very existence of the state. Role and position of capital cities.

THIRD PART - Evolution of production sectors, transport and communication networks.

The teaching deals with topics in line with the following goals and targets of the ONU 2030 Agenda:

  • Goal 1: End poverty in all its forms everywhere (specifically target 1.b: Create sound policy frameworks at the national, regional, and international levels, based on pro-poor and gender-sensitive development strategies, to support accelerated investment in poverty eradication actions);
  • Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls (specifically target 5.c: Adopt and strengthen sound policies and enforceable legislation for the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls at all levels);
  • Goal 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation (specifically target 9.1: Develop quality, reliable, sustainable, and resilient infrastructure, including regional and cross-border infrastructure, to support economic development and human well-being, with a focus on equitable access for all);
  • Goal 10: Reduce inequality within and among countries (specifically target 10.7: Facilitate orderly, safe, regular, and responsible migration and mobility of people, including through the implementation of planned and well-managed migration policies);
  • Goal 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable (specifically target 11.a: Support positive economic, social, and environmental links between urban, peri-urban, and rural areas by strengthening national and regional development planning);
  • Goal 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns (specifically target 12.7: Promote public procurement practices that are sustainable, in accordance with national policies and priorities);
  • Goal 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam is oral.
Group work, possibly carried out by attending students of SAP (9 ECTS), even if discussed during the course, forms an integral part of the oral exam

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The oral exam will allow to evaluate:
- mastery and deepening of knowledge,
- the ability to use the skills developed.
Evaluation criteria are:
- the quality of the oral communication,
- the correct use of the appropriate vocabulary,
- the ability of critical analysis, even on possible cases discussed.

The students of SAP (9 ECTS) who carry out the group work will also be assessed on the quality of the paper as regards the content and formal aspects.
