OVERVIEW

This module includes an introduction to Translation theory and to Swedish syntax and semantics and a practical Swedish language course at the B1/B2 level.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

This module aims to introduce students to the scientific study of the Swedish language, in particular translation, semantics and Swedish syntax, and to bring students to the B1/B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The linguistics module ("theoretical module") is made up of 30 classroom lectures equivalent to 9 CFU that can be obtained by passing the exams related to the theoretical module and to the practical course.
The linguistics module consists of an introduction to Translation theory and to Swedish syntax and phrase semantics. More specifically: equivalence, localization, translation techniques, basics of lexical and phrase semantics, translation strategies, realia, phrases, clauses and sentences, word order, parataxis and hypotaxis, transformations, basics of Text linguistics and of stylistics.
The "practical" course is made up of 80 classes. The main topics will be: subjunctions and subordinate clauses, word order, vocabulary, phraseology and idioms, strong and irregular verbs, passive constructions, text reading and translation, listening comprehension, participles, complex sentences, prepositions, phrasal verbs, reading and translation, listening comprehension, writing.

At the end of the course students will be able to understand different kinds of written texts and to carry on a conversation in Swedish on any topic. They will also have learned advanced concepts of Swedish syntax, in particular the structure of complex phrases and sentences, and they will be able to translate several kinds of texts from Swedish into Italian.

TEACHING METHODS

Swedish Language III is divided into two parts: a one-semester linguistics module ("modulo teorico"), which is held in the first semester, and a two-semester practical language module ("modulo pratico" or "esercitazioni" or "lettorato").
The linguistics module is made up of weekly classroom lectures (3 hours a week over 10 weeks in the first semester).
The practical module is made up of weekly classroom lessons (4 hours a week over 20 weeks, i.e. 10 weeks per semester).
Attendance is not compulsory but strongly recommended.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

"Analysis and Translation of Swedish texts", linguistics module made up of 30 classroom lectures. Main topics: basics of translation theory, principles of semantics, syntax, styles, texture, cohesion, literary prose texts, poetry, texts for special purposes.
The practical module is made up of 80 classroom lessons. Main topics: participles, passive, complex sentences, word order, subjunctions, prepositions, vocabulary and phraseology, phrasal verbs, text reading and translation, reading and listening comprehension.

There is no separate program for non-attending students. Students with disability or other special educational needs are advised to contact the teachers at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching and exam methods and to provide suitable compensatory instruments.

Lecture notes for the linguistics module distributed during the lessons and available in Teams and Aulaweb in the first semester. The texts to be translated and analysed will be later included in the lecture notes.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The linguistics module (only for 9 CFU) is assessed through an oral exam. There are two sittings in each of the three exam sessions. The practical module is assessed through a written paper (one sitting in each of the three exam sessions) and an oral exam (two sittings in each session).

The written paper consists of a listening comprehension, a reading comprehension and a composition.

The oral exam on the theoretical module consists of the the commentary on the texts analyzed and translated during the lessons. Students must be able to translate a selection of texts into Italian and to motivate their translation strategies.

The oral exam on the practical module consists of a conversation in Swedish.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Swedish Language III is divided into two parts: a one-semester linguistics module ("modulo teorico"), which is held in the second semester, and a two-semester practical module ("modulo pratico" or "esercitazioni" or "lettorato").

Each component ("modulo pratico" and "modulo teorico") is assessed separately.
The practical module is assessed at the end of the second semester through a written exam paper (writing, listening and reading comprehension) and an oral exam (conversation).
The linguistics module is assessed through an oral exam at the end of the first semester. Students are required to translate and analyze different types of texts.

The final mark is calculated as follows:
33% (of the overall mark) is the written practical part;
33% (of the overall mark) is the oral practical part;
33% (of the overall mark) is the linguistics part.
