CODE 72735 ACADEMIC YEAR 2023/2024 CREDITS 6 cfu anno 2 LINGUE E CULTURE MODERNE 8740 (L-11) - GENOVA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR L-FIL-LET/15 LANGUAGE Italian TEACHING LOCATION GENOVA SEMESTER 1° Semester TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB OVERVIEW The course is addressed to the students of the curriculum "Lingue e culture moderne per l'impresa e il turismo" and is compulsory for those of them having chosen two Germanic languages (English, German or Swedish). For the students learning only one Germanic language it is, on the other hand, alternative to another philological discipline. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Germanic Philology I B provides an introduction to Germanic Philology, paying particular attention to the history of the Germanic peoples and to the Germanic cultural and linguistic heritage in Italy. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the course, students will be able to: - present the historical events connected to the Germanic peoples and their migration; - describe the most significant features of Germanic culture; - understand the problems connected with the edition of Old Germanic texts; - discuss the editing strategies most adequate to the tradition of the texts presented in class; - describe the Germanic influence on the Italian language; - compare the literary tradition on Theoderic the Great with the historical data about the Ostrogothic kingdom in Italy; - use specific philological terminology accurately. PREREQUISITES There are no specific prerequirements to this course. TEACHING METHODS The course will be held in presence. Materials will be available on the Aulaweb platform. SYLLABUS/CONTENT 1. Germanic Philology: meaning and methods; history of the discipline; 2. Italy and the Germanic peoples; 3. Germanic culture; 4. Germanic elements in the Italian language; 5. Textual criticism of Germanic texts. No distinctiion is going to be made between students who have attended classes and those who have not. Schedule: Thursday 13-14 Aula 18 Friday 11-13 Aula 17 Class schedule GERMANIC PHILOLOGY I B EXAMS EXAM DESCRIPTION Oral exam, usually in Italian, on the various topics dealt with during the course. There will be two exam session in Winter (January-February), three in Summer (June-July) and two in Fall (September). ASSESSMENT METHODS The oral exam will deal with the course topics, paying particular attention to the socio-cultural evolution of the Germanic language area and to the linguistic and culture heritage in Italy. The evaluation will not only take into account the student's knowledge, but also his/her ability to use appropriate language and terminology.
