The achieved competence will be a good knowledge of the basic physics needed to design end retrofit effectively acoustic and lighting layouts of existing buildings. Attention will be given also to current law and technical regulations, toghether with measurement and software design tools. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES Applied Acoustics. The aim of this part of the course is to provide the basic knowledge of applied acoustics to be used in the cases of technical interest for building engineers, with a particular focus on building renovation. After the study of basic topics regarding physical acoustics, the subjects of acoustic measurements, building acoustics, and architectural acoustics will be deepened. For the Applied Acoustics part, the course aims to provide the student with the basic skills necessary to address the acoustic aspects of building design. The ability to analyze physical and technical problems related to achieving adequate acoustic well-being, and the basic tools useful for a correct acoustic design of indoor and outdoor environments are provided. Special attention will be paid to the learning of techniques for refitting and renovation of existing buildings TEACHING METHODS The part Applied Acoustics is based on theoretical lectures (16 hours), practical application and laboratory activity (8 hours). SYLLABUS/CONTENT Applied Acoustics. Physical acoustics. Sound propagation. Elements of psychoacoustics. Acoustic measurements. Noise and sound criteria. Sound sources. Sound propagation in free field. Reflection, refraction, diffraction. Acoustic reverberation. Sound propagation in rooms. Indoor and outdoor acoustic insulation. Sound insulation in buildings. Acoustic properties of materials: sound absorption and attenuation. Standards and regulations concerning environmental and building acoustics.
