AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of course the student is expected to be able to: apply basic laws and models to the solution of simple heat transfer problems; understand engineering problems related to the building and its envelope; estimate the thermal loads of the building. The student will also acquire: the ability to manage their social interactions, foster a collaborative attitude, and engage in constructive communication in different environments; the ability to develop their imagination and creativity, engage in critical thinking, and employ strategic thinking; decision-making autonomy, collaborative attitude, human and material resource management, coordination skills, negotiation abilities, and uncertainty management. TEACHING METHODS Lectures; computer-based exercises and design, both individually and in groups. SYLLABUS/CONTENT HEAT CONDUCTION: General heat conduction equation; boundary and initial conditions; the thermal resistance approach; critical radius of insulation. HEAT CONVECTION: Fundamentals and preliminary analysis; equation for the conservation of mass, momentum and energy; forced convection in tubes; natural convection; correlations. THERMAL RADIATION: Blackbody and gray surfaces radiation; radiation heat transfer: black surfaces and diffuse, gray surfaces. Building envelope: losses and gains through opaque and glazed components, thermal bridges, Glaser analysis; ventilation loads; internal and solar gains; solutions to reduce the heating and cooling loads. Fundamentals of thermal comfort, psychometry and air conditioning; thermal plant efficiencies; calculation of primary energy requirements in buildings. This unit contributes to the achievement of the following Sustainable Development Goals of the UN 2030 Agenda: 4. Quality Education, 7. Clean and Affordable Energy, 9. Enterprise, innovation and infrastructure, 11. Sustainable cities and communities, 13. Fighting climate change. RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY Y. Cengel. Heat and Mass Transfer, Ed. ASSESSMENT METHODS The oral examination in based on a specific topic among those presented during the course, with in addition a couple of short questions on other one/two subjects. The aim of the examination is to assess the student knowledge and the skill in reasoning and subject presentation. Students with learning disorders ("Disturbi Specifici di Apprendimento", DSA) will be allowed to use specific modalities and supports that will be determined on a case-by-case basis in agreement with the delegate of the Engineering courses in the Committee for the Inclusion of Students with Disabilities.
