AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The teaching aims to provide a thorough understanding of the major petrochemical and refinery processes, critical analysis of the motivations of the solutions used in the production of the main products and the criteria for a correct approach to the design of a chemical process in terms of productivity, safety and environmental protection. The relationships between the thermodynamic and kinetic aspects to the plant design and process optimization will be emphasized.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

In particular, the objective is, starting from the detailed analysis of the current industrial chemical processes, to provide the student with the knowledge necessary to be able to evaluate the possible and the best solutions for the choice of reactors, unit operations and process configurations applicable for the production of organic chimical intermediates.

Given the thermodynamic and kinetic characteristics of the reactions of industrial interest, the student will be able to evaluate the different options for the optimal configuration of the reactor to be used. Similarly, we intend to provide the student with the knowledge necessary to evaluate the possible or the best technical solutions (unit operations) for the separation of components of complex mixtures or for the purification of fluid flows and solids.

Overall, the student will acquire the ability to evaluate, in practical terms and based on the composition of raw materials, as well as the thermodynamic, kinetic, economic, safety and environmental aspects, the reasons for the technical choices of existing processes and to design, similarly , processes and innovative technologies.

The emphasis is on the choice of optimal reactors, with different technological solutions, and potential and possibly alternative unit operations.
