The course introduces students to environmental engineering, providing an overview of the methodologies used in engineering practice and developing essential skills for the interpretation and eventual resolution of environmental problems. The course includes a first part introducing the principles of river, environmental, maritime and coastal hydraulics, as well as environmental hygiene, followed by a second part where public and private subjects operating not only in the local or national environmental sector will be invited to conduct seminars on specific topics of their competence introduced in the first part of the course
The course aims to provide students with basic engineering skills that enable them to understand natural and anthropogenic processes, with particular reference to water resources. The lectures are conducted through a series of seminars on land prevention and protection, the sustainable use of natural resources and the design of interventions aimed at the protection of the anthropic and natural environment and the protection of the health of the community taking both surface water bodies and the sea as reference.
Students are encouraged to discuss a series of case studies and are involved in the in-depth study and presentation of specific environmental aspects also considering their potential impact on human health.

Students are required to prepare a written report developing a topic of their choice from those covered in class. This report must be sent to the course lecturer at least 10 days before the oral examination. The written report will be reviewed by the course lecturers and the oral examination will consist of a presentation and discussion of this report.
Students will be assessed on the basis of the written report they submit to the course lecturer before taking the oral examination. The oral test will consist of a presentation by the student of this written paper, during which the student must show that he/she has acquired sufficient mastery of the subject matter and must be able to hold a discussion with the lecturer.
Working students and students with a certified DSA, disability or other special educational needs are advised to contact the lecturer at the beginning of the course in order to agree on teaching and examination methods that, while respecting the teaching objectives, take into account individual learning methods.
