OBJECTIVES: The objective is to illustrate the fundamentals of geotechnical engineering, emphasising practical aspects related to soil classification and hydro-mechanical characterisation of earthworks. The aim of the course is to provide basic knowledge to understand and analyse some of the main applicative problems related to seepage in soils and the design of retaining structures and foundations.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: Classification of soils. Evaluation of initial stress states and their possible evolution over time. Analysis of seepage in two-phase porous media. Strength of soils with a focus on the calculation of the thrust on retaining walls and the bearing capacity of foundations.
The course consists of theoretical and practical lectures. Working students and students with a certified DSA, disability or other special educational needs are advised to contact the lecturer at the beginning of the course to be informed about teaching and examination methods.
