Particular attention is devoted to the meaning and role of context in the design of a single-family house with outdoor space. Despite the frequent ambiguity surrounding its uses, that of 'context' is a crucial concept in architecture. The term (from Latin contextus, past participle of contexĕre, literally "to weave together") was introduced into the field of architecture in the middle of the last century to draw attention to the relationship between the individual and urban spaces. In the field of morphological-spatial investigations, the study of context concerns, among other aspects, the identification of solids, voids, alignments, perspective views, symmetries, dimensional and/or volumetric relationships, flows, continuities and discontinuities, interactions, edges, shadows and lights. Aware of the multiplicity of perspectives on the subject, the workshop explores the theme of context in architectural design by adopting the methodological approach of the American architect Robert Venturi. Using the text Complexity and contradiction in architecture (MoMa, 1966) as a theoretical-scientific basis, the Laboratorio investigates the ways in which the context acts on the perception of buildings and how, when it or parts of it vary, a change of meaning occurs in architecture. Following this approach, the design of a single-family house with outdoor space aims to implement the principle of designing from the outside in, reflecting on the reciprocal influence between site and architecture. Now in its third year of theoretical-practical experimentation, the Design Studio aims to materialise Venturi's idea that the architect accepts and creates context. The course is held in Italian.
