The course deals with the criteria and technical addresses for the verification and assessment of the maximum flow and flood hydrogram.
AIMS AND CONTENT
The course aims to provide students with the tools for verifying and evaluating flow rates and flood hydrograms. Detailed hydrological studies or statistical methods for hydrology and numerical modelling applications for hydrology are addressed during the teaching.
AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES
The Applied Hydrology module aims to deepen the topics related to the hydrological inflow-deflows modelling and to apply the tools of statistical hydrology in order to provide the student with criteria and technical guidelines for the verification and evaluation of flow rates and flood hydrograms. In the Applied Hydrology module, probabilistic methods will be applied for the direct determination of design rainfall and floods and for the verification and re-examination of historical events; furthermore, several indirect methods (Hydrological models) will be developed and applied for the determination of discharge and flood hydrograms. Particular attention will be paid to the determination of flood hydrograms needed in the assessment of the hydraulic hazard.
The course includes 50 hours of lectures including at least 10 hours of exercises in order to deepen the topics addressed from a theoretical point of view. The student will perform some exercises related to the statistical analysis of time series of maximum precipitation heights for an assigned duration and to the determination of flow rates and flood hydrograms. These exercises will be discussed during the oral examination.
Working students and students with DSA, disability or other certification of special educational needs are advised to contact the teacher at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching and exam methods which, in compliance with the teaching objectives, take into account individual ways of learning.
The main contents of the course are as follows:
- Recalls of inferential statistics
- Local statistical analysis of hydrological extremes (rain/flow)
- Regional statistical analysis of hydrological extremes (rain/flow)
- Hydrologic modelling for extreme hydrology
- Flood formation models
The student will use the ANÁBASI tool (developed by ISPRA) for the basic statistical analysis of hydrological series and will carry out operational calculations for the determination of flow rates and flood hydrograms with reference to the detailed hydrological studies reported in the evaluation sheets of the Guidelines of Regione Liguria DGR 359/2008.

The oral examination aims at testing the theoretic knowledge and the skill to solve applied problems. Furthermore the students have to discuss/illustrate the results of the exercise relating to the frequency analysis of the extreme events and the assessment of flow rates and flood hydrograms for specific Ligurian catchments.
