CODE 108673 ACADEMIC YEAR 2023/2024 CREDITS 2 cfu anno 3 8451 (LM-13) - GENOVA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR CHIM/01 LANGUAGE Italian TEACHING LOCATION GENOVA SEMESTER 1° Semester MODULES Questo insegnamento è un modulo di: OPTIONAL SUBJECTS (PCT MD) III YEAR TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB AIMS AND CONTENT AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the course, the student will be able to: - describe the principles for the development and application of analytical strategies in forensics; - illustrate the application of the main instrumental analytical techniques to issues of forensic interest; - knowing how to present in a descriptive way the work procedures to be implemented in a forensic analytical laboratory. TEACHING METHODS The course will be taught with frontal lessons: the teachers, with the help of multimedia presentations (including graphic and video material), will illustrate the contents of the course. Depending on the sanitary situation and on the instructions of the University, teaching activity can be carried out remotely on the MS-Teams platform. The course program and teaching methods will not change. SYLLABUS/CONTENT Requirements of an analytical method in the forensic field; main instrumental techniques used; innovative extraction techniques; non-destructive analysis techniques; fingerprint detection on porous and non-porous surfaces; analysis of classic and emerging substances of abuse; analysis of explosives and combustion accelerators; verification of authenticity of branded and valuable products. EXAMS EXAM DESCRIPTION The exam will consist in an oral presentation of a case study from the scientific literature related to the application of analytical methods in the forensic field. After the presentation, the teachers will make questions on theoretical aspects addressed during the course. The presentation will last between 15 and 20 minutes, followed by 1-3 questions. ASSESSMENT METHODS During the presentation of the case study, the teachers will assess the degree of understanding of the topic exposed, as well as the clarity of exposition and the use of an appropriate vocabulary. The follow-up questions have to be considered fundamental for passing the exam.
