CODE 112401 ACADEMIC YEAR 2023/2024 CREDITS 1 cfu anno LETTERE 8457 (L-10) - GENOVA TEACHING LOCATION GENOVA SEMESTER 2° Semester TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB OVERVIEW Translating a literary work is something which is often described as a full contact match between the translator and the text. Ancient Greek literature is no exception and it represents in fact one of the most demanding touchstone. This course aims at suscitating in the students an active and aware attitude towards this challenge. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The activities of thic course aim at the acquisition of the appropriate analysis method for translating and interpreting ancient Greek texts of medium-high level. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES Participation in the activities of this course will allow students to acquire: – the ability to analyze the morphosyntactic structures of texts of ancient Greek literature of medium-high level – the ability to recognize and interpret the linguistic-stylistic characteristics of texts of ancient Greek literature of medium-high level – the ability to appropriately translate into Italian, from the point of view of both syntactic and lexical choices, texts of ancient Greek literature of medium-high level. PREREQUISITES A mandatory prerequisite is an intermediate proficiency in ancient Greek language. TEACHING METHODS The course will have an active and participatory approach (workshop): the Greek text will be discussed and cooperatively translated (with the possible support of ICT), in order to distinguish among unacceptable translations, admissible translations and optimal translations. The focus will be not only on the morpho-syntactic structures (that will be revised, if necessary), but also the lexical and stylistic-rhetorical level. Students are requested to register on the Aulaweb page of the course. In order to obtain the attendance certificate, students will have to actively attend at least the 75% of the hours. RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY The Greek text will be supplied by the teacher in class and made available on Aulaweb. In order to participate to the activities, students will need a vocabulary of ancient Greek (the teacher can put a few copies at the students’ disposal); a grammar for reference purposes can also be useful.
