OVERVIEW

Translating ancient literary texts is a complex task that requires finding a balance between source and target language, between rules and exceptions, between form and content. It involves selecting the best solution among various acceptable options. Through an active and participatory approach, the "Lettorato avanzato di traduzione latina" enables students to face this challenge with awareness.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The activities of the “Lettorato avanzato di traduzione latina” aim at the acquisition of the appropriate analysis method for translating and interpreting ancient Latin texts of medium-high level.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • analyse the morphosyntactic structures of literary Latin texts of medium-high level
  • understand the meaning of Latin prose passages of medium-high level
  • identify the linguistic and stylistic features of the main authors and genres of Latin prose
  • appropriately translate into Italian, from the point of view of both syntactic and lexical choices, texts of ancient Latin literature of medium-high level
  • be aware of their translation choices.

PREREQUISITES

A mandatory prerequisite is an intermediate proficiency in Latin language. Students with scarce skills in Latin are invited to attend the beginning Latin "Lettorato".

TEACHING METHODS

The course will have an active and participatory approach (workshop): the Latin texts will be examined and cooperatively translated to differentiate between unacceptable translations, admissible translations and optimal translations. The focus will be not only on the morpho-syntactic structures (that will be revised, if necessary), but also the lexical and stylistic-rhetorical level.

Students are encouraged to register on the Aulaweb page of the course.

In order to obtain the attendance certificate, students will have to actively attend at least the 75% of the hours.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

In class, Latin prose texts with increasing levels of complexity will be analysed, discussed and translated.

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

Students need a Latin dictionary and a grammar for reference purposes, such as Marco Fucecchi, Luca Graverini, La lingua latina. Fondamenti di morfologia e sintassi, Le Monnier / Mondadori Education.
