AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The module aims at providing the basic knowledge for river engineering both in torrent and mild slope river settlement. Particular attention is posed on the engineering design features, the interaction between river and structures and river ecosystem

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The first objective relates to the acquisition of knowledge concerning:

  • sediment transport phenomena (erosion and deposition) in watercourses;
  • main river engineering structures (transversal and longitudinal protection against erosion, maintenance of bed river profile) and water flow control structures;

The second objective concerns the acquisition of the main skills aimed at

  • planning and designing river engineering structures against erosion or flood control structures

Additionally, in the framework of the laboratory activities carried on in small groups during the course, students will be able to:

  • critically re-elaborate and use the knowledge acquired;
  • develop the capability of managing their social interactions with a collaborative attitude and adopting constructive communication processes;
  • develop decision-making autonomy, a collaborative attitude, the ability to manage information and materials, to negotiate solutions and to treat the uncertainties.

TEACHING METHODS

The course foresees 50 hours of lessons divided into 30 hours of theoretical lessons and 20 hours of practical/application lessons to examine the design issues related to river engineering structures and flood control structures. Starting from the supplementary material provided during the course, it the drafting of a short preliminary project report will request at the end of the course.

Working students and students with learning disorders ("Disturbi Specifici di Apprendimento", DSA), disability or other certification of special educational needs are advised to contact the teacher at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching and exam methods which, in compliance with the teaching objectives, take into account individual ways of learning.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The main contents of the course are as follows:

  1. Introduction to sediment transport.
  2. Criteria for the determination of sediment transport
  3. Criteria for the selection and designing of river engineering structures;
  4. Longitudinal and transversal structures in torrent and mild slope river settlement;
  5. Flood control structures;
  6. Overview of the different designing aspects (from regulatory aspects to the economic feasibility).

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam of the course consists of an oral discussion. The admission to the oral exam is subject to the positive evaluation of a preliminary project report drawn up by a small group of students (2/3 students maximum) in which a river engineering project is proposed to address the hydraulic problem on the Ligurian territory presented during the course. The student will therefore discuss and explain the proposed solutions, motivating the technical choices during the oral examination.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The oral exam consists of an individual interview with the aim of testing the operational skills acquired by the student during the course, with particular reference to the river engineering structures. During the semester, case studies will be proposed (real or hypothetical situations) that will be the subject of specific reports carried out in small working groups (max 3 students). In particular, a different case study may be proposed for each group, alternatively the same problem may be studied in depth according to different aspects.

In general, students must demonstrate the ability to synthesise and illustrate the concepts, as well as the ability to critically re-elaborate and effectively use the knowledge acquired. The interaction with other students within the group will be also considered.
