AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The teaching aims at providing students with knowledge related to the organization of the eukaryotic cell at the structural and ultrastructural levels. It also aims at discussing  knowledge related to the main structural and functional characteristics of different tissues with reference to their anatomical distribution.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES:

The student will be able to classify different tissues on the basis of the knowledge acquired and related to the structural characteristics of the cellular and extracellular component. The student will also be able to describe the functional characteristics of different tissues by relating them to their structure and anatomical distribution.

TEACHING METHODS

Frontal lectures in the classroom.

The use of teaching tools such as Socrative or Mentimeter may be used for greater student involvement during teaching activities.

It is possible that the mode of conducting lectures may be changed due to emergency situations that prevent the conduct of in-person lectures. In that case, lectures will be conducted online through the Teams platform, using suitable substitute teaching tools.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

- General organization of the human eukaryotic cell. Main structural and functional features of the plasma membrane, cytosol, cytoplasmic organelles and nucleus.

- Hints of cell differentiation and histogenesis.

- Epithelial lining tissue: morpho-functional characteristics, classification and anatomical distribution.

- Glandular epithelial tissue: classification of exocrine and endocrine glands and their anatomical distribution.

- Tissues of mesenchymal origin: general characteristics; cells and extracellular matrix.

- Classification and morpho-functional characteristics of connective tissue proper and adipose tissue.

- Support connective tissues: cartilage tissue and bone tissue;morpho-functional characteristics of different types of cartilage and hints on their anatomical distribution.

- Hints on the morpho-functional characteristics of nonlamellar bone tissue; main morpho-functional characteristics of compact and spongy lamellar bone tissue; anatomical distribution. Hints on the process of ossification.

- Connective tissue with trophic function: blood and lymph. General characteristics of blood. Plasma and corpuscular elements (erythrocytes, platelets and leukocytes). Leukocyte formula.

- Lymphoid tissue: major differences between primary (thymus and bone marrow) and secondary (lymph nodes, spleen and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue) lymphoid organs. Notes on tissue histology.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The oral examination is designed to assess the learning of knowledge related to the topics illustrated and discussed in the classroom and the ability to integrate and contextualize this knowledge.

The exam is taken at the integrated course level. The assessment of learning for the specific teaching is done through oral exam

For cases with certification of DSA, disability or other special educational needs, the University's Disability and DSA rules and regulations will be applied (https://unige.it/disabilita-dsa/studenti-disabilit%C3%A0-normativa).

Please also refer to the "Other Information" section of this teaching record.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The chosen mode of examination allows to verify the acquisition of the knowledge included in the training objectives

The oral exam, which is the standard mode of examination, allows  the best assessment of how  the student is oriented in the entire panorama of topics addressed in the classroom, also allowing the evaluation of his or her  ability to integrate structural notions with functional concepts.

It is possible that emergency situations will prevent the conduct of the exam in person. In that case it could be  possible the use of a written test. The Teams platform and/or the aulaweb portal will be used.

FURTHER INFORMATION

In the case of DSA  certification, disability or other special educational needs, it is recommended   to contact both the departmental contact person, Prof. Nicola Girtler (nicolagirtler@unige.it), and the teacher at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching and examination modalities that, while respecting the teaching objectives, take into account individual learning modalities and provide suitable compensatory tools accepted  by the University's Service for DSA Students.
