CODE 95136 ACADEMIC YEAR 2024/2025 CREDITS 6 cfu anno 2 ECONOMIA E MANAGEMENT MARITTIMO E PORTUALE 8708 (LM-77) - GENOVA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR MAT/09 TEACHING LOCATION GENOVA SEMESTER 1° Semester TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB OVERVIEW The course aims at providing students some management science techniques (mathematical programming, optimization on networks, heuristic approaches) necessary for the operational management of complex systems such as maritime terminals. The problems will be presented by some operators, analyzed and solved organizing project works. Software such as Excel and/or LINGOwill be used. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The course aims at learning optimization methods necessary to cope with complex problems that originate in the management of operations at maritime terminals. The consolidation of the proposed methodologies is supported by the development of case studies; models will be implemented and solved thanks to optimization software and spreadsheet Excel AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The course aims at providing optimization methods necessary to cope with complex problems that originate in the management of operations at maritime terminals. The consolidation of the proposed methodologies is supported by the development of case studies; models will be implemented and solved thanks to optimization software and/or spreadsheet Excel. The case studies analysed will allow the development of awareness of personal learning level, of ability to apply the studied techniques, understanding one's own needs for skills development.Furthermore, the solution of the problems contextualized in real systems allows the development of imagination, creativity, critical reflection, and problem-solving. At the end of the course students will be able to: • analyse a decision process • formulate a decision problem • implement a mathematical linear programming model (integer-binary) • solve some of the typical problems in the management of operations at maritime terminals • evaluate the level of personal learning and the ability to apply the techniques studied, understanding any need to develop further skills • critically analyse the solutions obtained by assessing their correctness and feasibility • carry out scenario analyses and compare the alternatives PREREQUISITES Opration Reseacrh Linear programming and Integer linear programming Graphs TEACHING METHODS Lessons will be organized as follows: problem presentation (if possible by an expert in the field) / problem analysis / solution approaches proposals/ discussion project works / presentation project works. Approaches will be implemented with Excel and/or LINGO. During the course, homework will be assigned via AulaWeb Thanks to participation in working groups it is possible to obtain the following Open Badge: Ability in learning to learn - advanced level Project creation proficiency - basic/advanced level Students who have valid certification of physical or learning disabilities and who wish to discuss possible accommodations or other circumstances regarding lectures, coursework and exams, should speak both with the instructor and with Professor Serena Scotto (scotto@economia.unige.it), the Department’s disability liaison. SYLLABUS/CONTENT Part I: Analysis of some problems in the field of maritime-port logistics: 1. Berth management 2. Quay cranes and reach steakers scheduling 3. Organization and management of the yard 4. Container stowage planning problems 5. Train loading planning problem Part II: methods and tools for solving the analysed problems: • Graph theory / Network Optimization / ILP and binary LP • Heuristic approaches • Software (used in the lab) Spreadsheet (Excel) and/or LINGO Part III: Discussion of case studies.
