OVERVIEW

The course aims to provide students with the most important topics related to planning for logistic companies and those operating in the maritime port context

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course, based on an accounting approach, is intended to introduce students to the knowledge of the basic items concerning planning and control in shipping companies and ports. The course also aims to analyze the main tools involved in the long term and short term business decisional process.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The main teaching objectives are
- To introduce students to the study of the planning aspects of both logistics and transport (shipping) companies through the use of the main management tools (e.g. ABC, BSC, ...) that allow companies to take long, medium and short term decisions in line with the objectives to be achieved;
- To analyse, with particular reference to the reporting used and its evolution, the specificities of the planning, scheduling and control process of logistics and transport activities;
- Provide specific knowledge aiming at the creation, analysis and interpretation of specific reports related to the evaluation of the different types of performance of the company concerned;
- the use of excel sheets for the construction of tailor-made planning models and the analysis of alternative scenarios

PREREQUISITES

Basic knowledge of management accounting

TEACHING METHODS

Traditional lectures, frontal lectures in computer classroom, where all students have the possibility to define, develop and analyze the models using sw tools at the same time with the teacher. Group work and seminars are foreseen.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The teaching programme is developed by covering, in summary, the following main topics
- Management models for shipping companies and analysis of the logistics sector with specific reference to the transport sector;
- Business plan models;
- Mapping of logistics services, intermodality and door-to-door transport;
- The cost of logistics and its exchange value; the different elements that characterise the logistics system;
- Performance evaluation in logistics and transport through the use of established (budgeting) and innovative models (balanced scorecard, EVA and others);
- Business plan for complex decision making (port environment);
- Full costing of logistics and transport services (Shipping);
- Analysis of the current and future characteristics of the "port company" and in-depth analysis of the objectives, management models and tools used by the port authorities;
- Simulation analyses carried out using specific IT tools.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The assessment of learning will also be carried out through: evaluation of classroom work, participation in exercises proposed during the course, presentation and discussion of cases proposed as group work and (written) summary tests on the whole programme. Intermediate exams are possible
In order to take the exam, online registration is always compulsory.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The assessment of learning is carried out through the evaluation of all the work done in the classroom, the participation and work done at home, the presentation and exposition of the case studies carried out in the group and the (written/practical) synthesis tests of the whole programme. The final examination is a written examination, which can be taken a maximum of twice in sessions consisting of three calls
