French Language Level B1

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The object of the course is the systematic study of French in its phonological, morphological, syntactical and lexical dimensions. It also aims at developing students’ spoken and written competence with a special attention to politics, economics and law discourse.

TRAINING OBJECTIVES

The course has the following training objectives

  1. To address the phonological, morphological, syntactic and lexical dimensions of the French language.
  2. To develop the students' written and oral skills in French.
  3. To introduce terms from the political, economic and legal domains.
  4. To explain the institutions and cultures within the Francophonie, with a focus on France.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, the learner(s) will have acquired a competence in French language equivalent to level B1 of the CEFR.

The students will be able to understand the main points of a clear speech in standard language or in a familiar variety dealing with topics covered in the course. They will also be able to read and comment on simple, straightforward factual texts on topics related to the field of study. Students will have a sufficient linguistic repertoire to explain the main points of a concept and express their thoughts in commentary on a topic related to the field of study in a simple but structured manner. They will also be able to understand and comment in a simple manner on texts relating to international politics in the French-speaking area.

No prerequisites.

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures are given in the presential mode. Attendance is strongly recommended.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Theoretical module:

The programme may be subject to modification with possible in-depth studies on current events in the French-speaking area; in any case, each topic will be presented through ad-hoc teaching material, which will be uploaded on Aulaweb.

1.         The symbols of the Republic (Ozza).

2.         The French institutions (Ozza)

3.         France in Europe and the world (Gattiglia)

a.         The Francophonie.

b.         French colonialism and its legacies.

4.         The rights and duties of citizens (Ozza).

5.         Being a citizen in France (Gattiglia)

a.         French nationality and ius solis.

b.         Immigration in France: history, demography, social conflicts.

c.         The rights of gender minorities.

6.         The condition of women (Ozza)

Language exercise classes:

Development of skills corresponding to CEFR level B1 through morphosyntactic, lexical, and textual exercises.

Texts will be indicated at the beginning of the lectures.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Theoretical module: final oral examination will deal with subjects dealt with during the course. Non attending students may refer to Aulaweb instructions and material.

Practical exercises:

  1. Attending students: there will be two written exams, one at mid-course and one at the end, that will aim at assessing language competence.
  2. Non attending students: final written exam, aiming at assessing language competence

ASSESSMENT METHODS

EXAMINATION PROCEDURE

Theoretical module: the oral test will focus on the discussion in language of the contents proposed in the lessons. Non-attenders may refer to the indications provided on Aulaweb.

Language exercise classes:

1.         Attending students: there will be two written tests, one midterm and one final, to test grammatical knowledge.

2.         Non-attending students: one final written test.

ESABAC and DELF-certified students are exempt from the written test and will only have to take the oral examination.
