OVERVIEW

Cognitive rehabilitation, an act aimed at improving the patient's quality of life and reintegrating the individual into the family and social environment (Mazzurro's theoretical assumptions on the properties of the brain that from various factors, including in particular age and reserve cognitive; from the analysis of behavior and cognitive abilities, explored in a structured and unstructured way, specific rehabilitation interventions can be planned, especially for the functions that are not compromised but which require deemed capable of improvement.

Most interventions are based on functional reorganization and learning assumptions

AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Neuropsychological rehabilitation is the study of the reorganization opportunities assumed by the brain that has been injured; starts from the assumption that the residual neuroplastic capacities of the brain can be stimulated and can be oriented to optimize the rehabilitation treatment in order to achieve the maximum possible degree of autonomy and independence through the recovery and / or compensation of impaired cognitive and behavioral skills. This measure is therefore aimed at improving the patient's quality of life and his reintegration into his own family and social environment.

The course aims to provide the student with skills regarding the objectives of cognitive rehabilitation, the assumptions underlying recovery, the main rehabilitation approaches aimed at improving impaired neuropsychological functions, as well as the impact of individual cognitive and emotional deficits on motor recovery. This will allow him to evaluate the type and extent of the rehabilitation effort in the individual according to the principles of personalized medicine.

TEACHING METHODS

Lessons are held through lectures that make use of slide projections. The modality is interactive and also includes projection of films, presentation of clinical cases and reading of fragments of specialized books, aimed at stimulating the student's critical sense and the ability to solve problems.

Students with certified DSA, disability or other special educational needs are encouraged to contact lecturers at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching methods that, while respecting the teaching objectives, take into account individual learning patterns and provide suitable compensatory tools

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The oral exam will mainly focus on the topics covered during the lectures and in any case on all those specified in the program, and will have the purpose of assessing not only if the student has reached an adequate level of knowledge, but if he has acquired the ability to critically analyze the neuropsychological problems that will be posed during the exam, evaluate a neuropsychological rehabilitation scheme and create individualized treatment paths. Further details on how to prepare the exam and the degree of depth of each topic will be communicated during the lessons.

Students with DSA or other regularly certified special educational needs will be able to agree with the professor on the written or oral mode of the examination, by contacting professors at least 10 days before the exam. They will also be able to take advantage of 30 % additional time

FURTHER INFORMATION

Girtler (nicolagirtler@unige.it ) and evaluated the single case, he will send to the teachers the necessary directions both for  lessons development  and for modality of examination
