OVERVIEW

Oncology rehabilitation is the branch of rehabilitative medicine that deals with the iatrogenic outcomes, that is resulting from early and late surgical, medical and radiation treatments in oncology

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

To acquire information on oncological surgery and rehabilitation. To know the principles of rehabilitation of the main uro-gynecological and pelvic floor pathologies. To know the patient's assessment of both medical and surgical respiratory and cardiological pathology, indications and contraindications to the rehabilitative treatment and the most recent physiotherapy techniques.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to illustrate the main issues susceptible to rehabilitation treatment in cancer patients.

At the end of the course, the student must:

- Know the meaning of rehabilitation in oncology, the possibilities of recovery in relation to the quality of life

- Describe the main outcomes of surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy

- Identify general and specific objectives in cancer rehabilitation

- Evaluate and manage the patient in relation to the clinical history and stage of pathology

- Develop a therapeutic project, using the most suitable prevention, pharmacological, instrumental, manual and rehabilitation techniques for the specific patient.

6. Pain in oncological rehabilitation. Assessment and treatment.  Complementary medicine.

7. Metastasis. Precautions in rehabilitative treatment.

TEACHING METHODS

Theoretical lessons for a total of 10 hours (1 cfu)

Students with SLD, disability or other special educational needs certification are strongly encouraged to contact the teachers at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching methods which, respecting the teaching objectives, take into account individual learning methods and provide suitable

compensatory instruments

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

 

 

 

• Meaning of rehabilitation in oncology: the concept of iatrogenic outcome. Research and application of protocols

• The evaluation of the patient and the prescription of the physiotherapy program. The quality of life

• Outcomes from oncological surgery: possibility of recovery and changes over time

• Outcomes from radiotherapy and chemotherapy: possibility of recovery and changes over time

• Lymphedema from lymph node dissection and radiotherapy. Secondary lymphedema. Treatment according to the guidelines

• Pain in cancer rehabilitation. Evaluation and methods of treatment. Complementary therapies

• Functional rehabilitation in operated breast cancer:

      1) evaluation of early and late outcomes of physiotherapy interest

     2) treatment guidelines

• Rehabilitation problems in cervicocephalic neoplasms:

     1) alterations in voluntary motility

     2) alterations in chewing, swallowing and the ability to eat

• Re-education in swallowing of physiotherapy competence

• Physiotherapy in the metastatic patient

• Physiotherapy in the patient with advanced oncological pathology

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam is oral. The grade will be mediated with the evaluations obtained in the other disciplines of the I.C.

Exam sessions will be available for the winter session (January - February) and for the summer session (June, July and September).

ASSESSMENT METHODS

It includes at least 2 questions asked by the teachers in charge of teaching.

It will be aimed at evaluating an appropriate knowledge of the topics covered in the module and in any case on all those specified in the program.

Students with SLD or with other regularly certified special educational needs will be able to agree with the teacher the written or oral modality, by contacting the teachers at least 10 days before the exam. They can also take advantage of 30% additional time.

In the case of a student with a certified SLD, it is necessary to contact the Referent Professor of the DISABILITY and SLD Commission for DINOGMI: Prof. N. Girtler (nicolagirtler@unige.it ) and, after evaluating the individual case, will send the teachers the necessary information both for the development of the lessons and the way they are carried out of the exam.
