OVERVIEW

The teaching focuses on the presentation of the main neuropsychiatric disorders of the developmental age and on their management, with attention to the child and the family.

EDUCATIONAL TARGETS AND LEARNING OTUCOMES

The teaching aims to

- identify the basics of child neuropsychiatry and child neurology,

- develop a general understanding of the interaction between biological, psychological, family and socio-environmental aspects

- describe, identify and analyze the issues related to the main disorders of childhood and adolescent neuropsychiatry, in the neurological field, with particular reference to intellectual disability, complex disabilities, epilepsy, infantile brain palsy, autism spectrum disorders

- implement the ability to observe and evaluate the skills in developmental age, in global and multidisciplinary management, and propose interventions on specific problems, also to activate an early recognition of disorders and their prevention.

EXPECTED LEARNING RESULTS

At the end of the course the student will be able to

- interpret the basic elements of child neuropsychiatry and the interaction between biological, psychological, family and socio-environmental aspects

- summarize the basic elements of the main neurological pathologies in the field of childhood and adolescent neuropsychiatry, with reference to epilepsy and febrile convulsions, intellectual disabilities, infantile cerebral palsy, movement disorders and neuromuscular disorders in developmental age and complex disabilities

- classify the main clinical forms

- recognize the principles of global care in Child Neuropsychiatry, with particular attention to Disability, with a view to planning therapeutic and enabling interventions

- distinguish the disorders in question, particularly in the early phase

- analytically understand the related signs and symptoms

- integrate the main diagnostic criteria, observation, and evaluation methods

- critically interpret the pathogenetic factors in role

- differentiate these disorders from related forms, in differential diagnosis

- discriminate the applicable methodologies

- evaluate the basis of the therapeutic-rehabilitation project and outline the basic principles of multidisciplinary management

- propose to families and, as far as feasible, to children and young people the observation and evaluation methodology to be carried out

- identify which factors are interfering in the evaluation process and how to affect them.

TEACHING METHODS

The class includes frontal lessons for a total of 10 hours and with the use of slides.

The course consists of theoretical / practical frontal lessons for a total of 10 hours (1 CFU).

Students with Specific Learning Disorder, disability or other special educational needs certification are strongly encouraged to contact the teachers at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching methods which, respecting the teaching objectives, should take into account individual learning methods and provide suitable compensatory instruments.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Psychomotor and emotional development

Epilepsy and febrile convulsions: general information, childhood epilepsies, therapy, related psychological problems

Intellectual disability: generalities, etiopathogenesis, clinic, management, syndromes and psychological phenotypes; intellectual pseudo-insufficiency and pseudo normality

Infantile Cerebral Palsy: classification, etiology, clinic, diagnosis, and management

Notions on Movement Disorders and Neuromuscular Disorders in the developmental age

Complex disabilities

Global Management of Disability in Child Neuropsychiatry

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Oral. Score out of thirty attributed according to the degree of knowledge and training acquired.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The exam is conducted to verify the achievement of the expected learning outcomes: ability to apply knowledge through the use of operational tools, communication skills through oral examination, start of training for interdisciplinary work and specific role, development skills of insight through experience.

Students with Specific Learning Disorder  or other regularly certified special educational needs will be able to agree on written or oral modalities with the teacher, by contacting the teachers at least 10 days before the exam. They can also take advantage of 30% additional time.

When a student is a certified DSA, it is required to contact the Referring Teacher of the DISABILITY and DSA Commission for DINOGMI: Prof. N. Girtler (nicolagirtler@unige.it ) and evaluated the single case, he will send to the teachers the necessary directions both for  lessons development  and for modality of examination
