OVERVIEW

The course of Rheumatology aims to guide the student to acquire knowledge of the major diseases of the locomotor system, in the field of rheumatology and to understand the importance of early diagnosis in order to avoid the cronicity and  consequently functional impairment and disability. In addition, the study of the pathophysiologic mechanisms and the clinical presentation of each rheumatic disease is the basis for planning an appropriate physical therapy and educative- rehabilitation program.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course explain about clinical symptoms and basic elements to make a differential diagnosis among the diseases, characterizing symptoms and signs of the major rheumatic diseases.
Where no early diagnosis is made and an adequate integrated multidisciplinary therapeutic program is set up, most of the rheumatic diseases have a significant socio-economic impact as they tend to chronic, resulting in functional impairments that limit the patient's quality of life ( disability).

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course and after a suitable study period the student will be able to:
- know about clinical symptoms and have basic elements to make a differential diagnosis among the major diseases, characterizing symptoms and signs of the major rheumatic diseases.
- Understand that where no early diagnosis is made and an adequate integrated multidisciplinary therapeutic program is set up, most of the rheumatic diseases have a significant socio-economic impact as they tend to chronic, resulting in functional impairments that limit the patient's quality of life ( disability).

TEACHING METHODS

Classroom Lectures (20 hours).

Lectures are performed in all the teaching location by owners teachers and are explained with slides and videos. The Students/Teachers percentage report allows a direct comparison and an use of collaborative methodology, discussion about rehabilitation and working groups.

In case of certification of specific learning disability, disability or other special educational needs, please contact both the Department contact person, Prof. Nicola Girtler, and the lecturer at the beginning of the lectures to agree on teaching and exam methods which, in compliance of the teaching objectives, take into account individual learning methods and provide suitable compensatory/dispensatory tools recognized by the University SLD Student Service.

 

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

1. Inflammatory diseases:

  • Rheumatoid and Psoriatic arthritis

  • Spondyloarthrits

  • Arthrtis in connective tissue diseases

  • Crystal arthrits and gout

  • Post-infective and reactive arthritis

2. Arthrosis:

  • Vertebral arthrosis

  • Arthrosis peripheral joints

  • Others Osteoarthritis

3. Joint manifestations accompanied by dysmetabolic disorders

4. Neuro-dystrophic and musculoskeletal diseases

5. Fibromyalgia

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Oral interview; the oral examination will be mainly directed to ensure a proper understanding of the theory discussed in the course.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The oral exam will focus mainly on the topics discussed during the frontal lessons and in any case on all those specified in the program, and will be used to assess whether the student has achieved an adequate level of knowledge and acquired analytical skills.

Students with LSD or other regularly certified special educational needs will be able to agree with the professor on the written or oral mode of the examination, by contacting professors at least 10 days before the exam. They will also be able to take advantage of 30 % additional time
