OVERVIEW

SCIENZE FISIOTERAPICHE IN ORTOPEDIA E REUMATOLOGIA

The module SCIENZE FISIOTERAPICHE IN ORTOPEDIA E REUMATOLOGIA based on the scientific evidence on the musculoskeletal pathologies, aims to develop the knowledge and the practical skills necessary to conduct a proper evaluation and to set a physiotherapy treatment program. The student will be able to: recognize the signs and symptoms, formulate objectives and treatment plan; evaluate the results in patients with deseases of the musculoskeletal system.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

AIMS AND CONTENTS

At the end of the course and after a suitable period of study taking into account the scientific evidence, the student will be able to acquire the theoretical knowledge and the practical skills necessary to conduct a proper assessment and set a specific program of physiotherapy treatment in patients suffering from diseases of the musculoskeletal system.

The goal is to be able to plan rehabilitation interventions and evidence-based strategies: from the guidelines to the implementation of diagnostic and therapeutic care pathways (PDTA) and protocols.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The discipline PHYSIOTHERAPY SCIENCES IN ORTHOPEDICS AND RHEUMATOLOGY aims to develop the theoretical knowledge and skills necessary to conduct a correct functional assessment and set up a personalized physiotherapy treatment program for the post-surgical orthopedic patient. The learning process involves alternating theoretical lessons with group work aimed at preparing clinical cases and followed by discussion. Particular attention will be paid to the application of the evidence based clinical practice methodology, implemented in a clinical context and interpreted in biopsychosocial terms and directed to the functioning of the person. Taking into account the specificities of orthopedic surgery, the general clinical condition and the basis of a biopsychosocial approach, the study program aims to favour the acquisition of the skills necessary to build a personalized physiotherapy intervention program.

At the end of the course the student must demonstrate that:

  1. Know and know how to apply the interpretative models of the functioning of the person (ICF, Load-Load-Capacity-Adaptation Model
  2. Knowing how to conduct an anamnestic collection in a way aimed at the specific clinical condition
  3. Be able to design a coherent objective assessment, based on the results of the anamnestic interview
  4. Know the methodology for applying the exercise according to the different clinical conditions and different moments of the healing process
  5. Knowing how to plan a physiotherapy intervention by choosing suitable objectives, strategies and techniques.
  6. Be able to express a prognosis starting from anamnestic and clinical data and according to the physiotherapy intervention.
  7. Knowing how to choose the most appropriate outcomes to measure in a personalized way the change in the clinical condition and the related measurement methods

TEACHING METHODS

The course consists of lectures for a total of 20 hours that will be delivered through the use of multimedia presentations, collaborative teaching methodologies and guided discussions on post-surgical orthopedic physiotherapy.

Students with SLD, disability or other special educational needs certification are strongly encouraged to contact the teachers at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching methods which, respecting the teaching objectives, take into account individual learning methods and provide suitable compensatory instruments.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Oral exam with open-ended questions and reasoning on specific clinical cases

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The oral exam will verify the learning of knowledge and the acquisition of the expected skills (see: learning outcomes). Particular attention will be paid to a correct use of specialized language and to the quality of oral presentation.

Students with LSD or other regularly certified special educational needs will be able to agree with the professor on the written or oral mode of the examination, by contacting professors at least 10 days before the exam. They will also be able to take advantage of 30 % additional time

FURTHER INFORMATION

When a student is a certified LSD, it is required to contact the Referring Teacher of the DISABILITY and DSA Commission for DINOGMI: Prof. N. Girtler (nicolagirtler@unige.it ) and evaluated the single case, he will send to the teachers the necessary directions both for  lessons development  and for modality of examination
