OVERVIEW

The basics of physiology and pathology will be provided in order to share a common language with other operators in the sector regarding nephrological syndromes according to the detailed contents in the program / content section

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Students will understand the basics of physiology and pathology necessary to be able to share a common language with other operators in the sector to be able to examine and monitor nephrological syndromes according to the detailed contents in the program / content section

TEACHING METHODS

10 hours of frontal lessons during which the main topics of the program will be exposed

Students with SLD, disability or other special educational needs certification are strongly encouraged to contact the teachers at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching methods which, respecting the teaching objectives, take into account individual learning methods and provide suitable compensatory instruments.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Students will learn to:

1. Recognize the clinical significance of the most important changes in urinalysis, 24-hour urine collection and estimation of glomerular filtrate

2. Understand the diagnostic utility in major kidney diseases  of the following instrumental tests: Rx abdomen, Rena Doppler ultrasound, intravenous urography, ascending pyelography, renal arteriography, renal scintigraphy, abdomen computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging

3. Clarify the role of renal biopsy in the clinical management of the kidney patient

4. Explain the clinical presentation of acute renal failure, chronic renal failure, cardiorenal syndrome, other nephrological syndromes

5. Distinguish the main alterations in acute and chronic renal failure with particular attention to liquids and electrolytes and acid-base balance

6. Summarize etiology, risk factors, prevention and management of contrast-induced nephropathy:

7. Describe the methods of replacement therapy by hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis

8. Describe the basic principles that make a patient a candidate for kidney transplantation and list the possible complications associated with it

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Quiz: Multiple choice questions

Verification of learning takes place only through the final written exam with multiple choice answers which aims to ascertain the actual acquisition by the student of the expected learning outcomes.

In order to pass the exam, thus reporting a grade of not less than 18/30, the student must demonstrate:

know and understand the etiopathogenesis, the pathophysiological bases and the main clinical pictures of renal system diseases with particular attention to the definition and stratification of the severity of kidney disease, and to the complications of acute and chronic renal failure.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The test will be carried out together with the questions of the other courses that make up the integrated course. The student will have to answer 31 questions divided by discipline, with 4 possible answers, of which only one is correct. "All of the above" and "none of the above" are not accepted as an answer. Those who have answered 31/31 questions correctly will be awarded honors in addition to the grade.

Students with SLD or other regularly certified special educational needs will be able to agree on written or oral modalities with the teacher, by contacting the teachers at least 10 days before the exam. They can also take advantage of 30% additional time.
